The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century, but this has been reversed since the beginning of the 21st century. The community also includes the hamlet (pedanía) Villanueva de la Oca , which has only about 5 inhabitants .
economy
The region, which is quite rainy by Spanish standards, has been shaped by agriculture for centuries. Since the 1960s, tourism within Spain has played an increasing role in economic life in the form of renting out holiday apartments (casas rurales) .
history
There are a few caves in the municipality where small prehistoric finds were discovered. Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing, however. The first documented evidence of the location seems to come from the year 871. Under Alfonso VIII (reigned 1158–1214) the area came to the Kingdom of Castile and in the 14th century came under the manorial rule (señorio) of the House of Velasco, which had held the title of duke since 1492 ; it never belonged to the neighboring county of Treviño, with which it forms a Burgalesian exclave within the Basque province of Álava.
Attractions
- Only small remains of the four-door medieval city wall have survived .
- A medieval gradient bridge crosses the Río Zadorra.
- Several houses in the village have heraldic shields made of stone .
- The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . The construction of the three-aisled hall church began at the end of the 15th century; both portals show clear echoes of the late Gothic . The star vault of the central nave clearly surpasses the simpler vaults of the side aisles; all three apses close flat. The Renaissance carved altar from 1535, which is divided into numerous fields, shows scenes from the life of Mary and ends in an impressive crucifixion group with a painted star background.
- Surroundings
- The late medieval Hospital de Santiago stands outside the former city wall on a branch line of the Camino de Santiago .
- Of the Castillo de Arganzón, which is about 4 km away, only the keep (torre del homenaje) can be seen.
