After a wave of emigration from the villages to the cities due to the abandonment of small farms and the mechanization of agriculture since the 1950s, it was decided in some regions of Spain to found new large communities.
economy
The inhabitants of the various villages and hamlets lived for centuries as a self-sufficient living from agriculture, which also included the keeping of cattle. Since the 1960s tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of the rental of holiday apartments (casas rurales) .
history
Several megalithic passage graves ( dolmens ) indicate a Neolithic settlement in the area; they are mostly in the time around 3700 BC. Dated. On the other hand, no finds were discovered from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and Moorish times. After the reconquest ( reconquista ) , the repopulation phase ( repoblación ) began; Several Romanesque churches were built in the 12th century , but there is no trace of castles (castillos) .
The Valle de Sedano appeared as an administrative unit for the first time in the 18th century, but in its current form the municipality was only created when several localities were merged in the 1970s.
Attractions
Sedano
- The single-nave parish church was built in the 15th and 15th centuries. Century and is located on a hill outside the village. The portal is - as usual in the region - on the south side.
- The town hall is located on the small square in the center of a former aristocratic palace from the 18th century, the ground floor of which is opened by arcades .
- There is a 19th century watermill nearby .
Moradillo de Sedano
- The single-nave church of San Esteban was built - probably as a priory church - in the 12th century; the date 1188 has been handed down. The tympanum, protected by a modern south porch, with the representation of Christ as Pantocrator in a mandorla held by angels is of outstanding quality ; two apostles (?) sit to the side. The 24 elders of the Apocalypse are enthroned in the inner archivolt with musical instruments, scrolls etc .; the next sheet is filled with various figures (knights, mythical animals, etc.) and the outer archivolt shows acanthus leaves. A diamond rod forms the outer frame .
- The Romanesque portal of the Church of Escalada, which has been stepped down several times, surprises with its masterful variety of ornaments: the bulges of the archivolts are profiled ; there are also various rod shapes ( pearl rod , rope rod and diamond rod ). The spandrels of the portal zone protruding slightly from the wall were previously decorated with joint paintings, etc.; the top is a partially figurative console frieze .
- There are some pretty quarry stone houses with wooden balcony porches and stone heraldic shields in the village .
- The place is particularly impressive because of its location surrounded by rugged rock walls - an impression that is increased by a waterfall-like torrent after heavy or prolonged rainfall.
- There are several cantilevered dry stone huts in the vicinity , which formerly served as a shelter and sleeping place for the guards over the (almost) ripe crops.
- The church of San Sebastian , built of rubble, has a simple Renaissance portal with a triangular gable and a three-part bell gable ( espadaña ) from the same period.
- There are several houses with stone heraldic shields in the village.
Quintanilla Escalada
- The parish church is a somewhat strange building from the 19th century.
Turzo
- The small church of Turzo has a pretty Romanesque south portal and a bell gable.
- Some houses are adorned with stone heraldic shields.
