economy

The small town was and is largely characterized by agriculture; Mainly wheat and barley are grown . San Juan del Monte is part of the Ribera del Duero wine region . Tourism (holiday apartments) has been an important source of income for the municipality since the middle of the 20th century.

history

There is hardly any information about the history of the place - it probably belonged to the places along the former border between Christian and Muslim spheres of influence that were repopulated in the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries by Christian immigrants from both the north and south of Spain ( repoblación ) or newly founded.

Attractions

  • The parish church of San Juan Bautista with its south portal, which is typical of the region, dates from the 16th century. An altarpiece from the 17th century adorns the interior of the church.
  • At the end of the Middle Ages, San Juan and its neighboring villages became more and more legally dependent on Peñaranda de Duero , from which they bought themselves off in 1780 against payment of an enormous sum of 2530 ducats for the poor rural communities. As a symbol of legal and administrative independence, a court column ( rollo ) was erected in San Juan del Monte .
  • The hermit church ( Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Vega ), built in the 18th century, stands just outside the village. A two-storey bell gable ( espadaña ) towers over the unadorned west facade. Remnants of Roman foundations were discovered in their vicinity.
