Women Men

The men's ice hockey tournament at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin took place from February 15 to 26 with twelve national teams - two fewer than at the Games in Salt Lake City . However, instead of the last 35 games, 38 were played. Of these 38 games, 17 took place in Torino Esposizioni with a capacity of 4,320 spectators, all others were played in Palasport Olimpico with a capacity of 12,350 .

Like the leagues of the European participating countries, the North American National Hockey League also interrupted the 2005/06 season from February 13 to 28 , so that the players active there had the opportunity to represent their home country. Sweden secured the Olympic victory in a purely Scandinavian final by beating Finland 3-2 . Third place went to the Czech Republic and won bronze.

qualification

In addition to the host nation Italy, the first eight nations of the IIHF world rankings qualified for the tournament after the 2004 World Cup . In addition, three participants were played in several qualifying tournaments.

The twelve teams of the Olympic ice hockey tournament were divided into two groups of six teams each in the preliminary round. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams in the IIHF world rankings after the 2004 World Cup according to the following key:

Group A Group B
A1 (1) B1 (2)
A2 (4) B2 (3)
A3 (5) B3 (6)
A4 (8) B4 (7)
A5 (9) B5 (10)
A6 (12) B6 (11)

The first two teams in the world rankings formed the group heads. It was followed by the teams in ranks 3 and 4 in second position and 5 and 6 in third and so on up to eighth place, so that the first four places in each group were occupied. Due to Italy's low world rankings, their classification remained open until after the qualifying tournaments were over. The three remaining places were determined by the three qualifiers. The best placed qualifier in the world rankings in 2004 was placed in Group A. As the other two qualifiers were better placed than Italy, both came in Group B, leaving Italy the remaining place in Group A. This ultimately resulted in the following groupings:

Group A Group B
CanadaCanada Canada (1) SwedenSweden Sweden (2)
Czech RepublicCzech Republic Czech Republic (4) SlovakiaSlovakia Slovakia (3)
FinlandFinland Finland (5) United StatesUnited States USA (6)
GermanyGermany Germany (8) RussiaRussia Russia (7)
SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (9) LatviaLatvia Latvia (10)
ItalyItaly Italy (19) KazakhstanKazakhstan Kazakhstan (17)

Within the groups, the teams initially play according to the everyone-versus-everyone mode , so that each team initially plays five games. The first four teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals. The winners will meet in the semifinals, with the winners playing the final for the gold medal and the losers the game for the bronze medal. There are no further placement games compared to the last tournament.
