Peter Budaj (born September 18, 1982 in Banská Bystrica , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey goalkeeper . During his active career between 2005 and 2018 he played 368 games for the Colorado Avalanche , Canadiens de Montréal , Los Angeles Kings and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League . He was also regularly on the ice in the American Hockey League , where he also played over 200 games. With the Slovak national team he took part in the Olympic Winter Games in 2006 , 2010 and 2014 .

Career

Peter Budaj started his career in his hometown Banská Bystrica , where he played in the juniors until 1999. In 1999 he moved to the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League for the Toronto St. Michael's Majors . After his second year in North America, he was selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round at position 63. After another year in the OHL Budaj moved in 2002 to the Hershey Bears , the AHL - farm team of Colorado. There he completed the 2002/03 season as a back-up goalkeeper behind Philippe Sauve , before he was the first goalkeeper from the 2003/04 season.

After a total of three years with the Hershey Bears, he made his debut on October 8, 2005 with the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League against the Dallas Stars . Colorado won the game 3-2 and Budaj saved 16 of 18 shots. He benefited from the fact that regular goalkeeper David Aebischer was transferred to the Montréal Canadiens for José Théodore during the season . Théodore was injured and Budaj was the goalkeeper for a few weeks. He played a total of 34 games in the 2005/06 season . At the beginning of the 2006/07 season , Budaj was number two behind Théodore, but Théodore weakened and Budaj performed well, so that he was now number one.

For the 2011/12 season, Budaj moved within the NHL to the Canadiens de Montréal . After three years in Montréal, Budaj and Patrick Holland were handed over to the Winnipeg Jets , which in turn transferred Eric Tangradi to the Canadiens. Budaj was handed over to the St. John's IceCaps in the AHL on the same day via the waiver . Subsequently, his expiring contract was not renewed, so he joined the Los Angeles Kings pre-season in August 2015 ; However, this with a trial contract (professional tryout contract) . This became a fixed one-year contract in October 2015, where he was used almost exclusively in the AHL with the Ontario Reign . There he dominated the AHL and led the league after the regular season in wins (42), shutouts (9), catch rate (93.2%) and goals against (1.75). Thus he received the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award and the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award as the best goalkeeper in the league and was also voted into the First All-Star Team . The Slovak's contract was therefore extended by one year in March 2016. Due to the injury of the regular goalkeeper of the Kings, Jonathan Quick , Budaj received the starting position in the gate of the Kings at the beginning of the season. After Quicks recovered in late February 2017, he and his compatriot Erik Černák were given two voting rights in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft - one conditional and one in the seventh round - for Ben Bishop and a five-round voting right in the same draft for the Tampa Bay Lightning transferred.

At the Lightning, he could not prevail against Louis Domingue as second goalkeeper behind Andrei Wassilewski , so he returned to the Los Angeles Kings in June 2018 in exchange for Andy Andreoff . There he was again mostly on the ice with the Ontario Reign and declared his active career over after the 2018/19 season. In total, he had completed 368 games in the NHL.

International

For Slovakia , Budaj took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in 2000 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2001 and 2002 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 2008 and 2010 World Championships as well as the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and 2010 in Vancouver . He also represented Slovakia in 2004 at the World Cup of Hockey .
