Eric Tangradi (born February 10, 1989 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League since December 2019 . The 1.93 m tall power forward was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2007 , before playing for four years for the Pittsburgh Penguins and three years for the Detroit Red Wings and their farm teams.

Career

youth

Eric Tangradi was born in Manayunk , a neighborhood in Philadelphia , and grew up there with his parents and two sisters. He attended Archbishop John Carroll High School and played for them in the regional high school league before going to Wyoming Seminary from 2005 to 2006 , a private school in preparation for college . Tangradi, however, decided not to study and moved to Belleville , Ontario at the age of 17 to play for the Belleville Bulls in one of the top three Canadian junior leagues , the Ontario Hockey League .

In his first regular season, he scored five weak goals in 65 games for a winger . However, he increased in the subsequent play-offs , achieved 17 points scorer in 15 games and thus drew attention for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2007 on itself. In this, the Anaheim Ducks selected him in 42nd position, but left him as usual with his junior team in order to continue to collect match practice. His second season in Belleville was directly more successful, he got 60 points in 56 games and failed with the team only in the final of the play-offs for the J. Ross Robertson Cup with 3: 4 at the Kitchener Rangers . Due to his convincing performances, he led the Bulls as team captain the next year and increased his statistics again to 88 points, which made him one of the top 10 scorers in the league . In December 2008 he had already signed an entry level contract with the Anaheim Ducks , which allowed the Ducks to hand it over to the Pittsburgh Penguins together with Chris Kunitz in February 2009 in return for Ryan Whitney .

Before Tangradi finally switched to the Penguins system, he took part with the US U20 national team at the 2009 U20 World Junior Championships in Ottawa , where he finished fifth. Tangradi himself was noticed negatively when he held the bat in the face of his opponent Christopher DiDomenico in the preliminary round match against Canada when he passed close to the American bench after a goal by his team.

Pittsburgh Penguins

In the Pittsburgh Penguins , Tangradi was first handed over to the farm team in the American Hockey League , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . There he completed his first games on a professional level, with Tangradi's style of playing as a classic power forward (at a height of 1.93 m and 100 kg body weight) established here at the latest. In this context, his nickname "Big Dog" developed. At the end of the 2009/10 season he made his debut in the NHL in the last game of the regular season . The following season 2010/11 began Tangradi in the NHL squad, but was sent back to the AHL after a few games. In the AHL he convinced with his achievements, so that he took part in the AHL All-Star Game 2011. In the spring of 2011 he was in the NHL squad again, but fell out for two months after an elbow blow from opponent Trevor Gillies in the game against the New York Islanders ; Gillies was banned for nine games. In total, he was on the ice 15 times in the NHL, scoring one goal and preparing two more.

In the following two seasons Tangradi played alternately in the NHL and AHL, where he had a large share of the success in the AHL, while in the NHL he was still said to have a lack of scorers (24 games and only two scorer points in the 2011/12 season). Most of the time he played in the fourth row as a classic power forward with a body-hugging game, but less pronounced technique.

Winnipeg Jets

In February 2013, during the 2012/13 season shortened by the lockout , the Penguins gave him in exchange for a six-round draft pick to the Winnipeg Jets . The pick was originally for the seventh round of the 2013 Entry Draft, but was upgraded to one for the sixth round by a certain number of inserts Tangradi achieved with the Jets. Indeed, Tangradi promptly became a regular player, playing 91 games for the Jets in his first two years in Winnipeg.

Constant change

On October 5, 2014, Tangradi was handed over by the Jets to the Canadiens de Montréal , which in turn transferred Patrick Holland and Peter Budaj to Winnipeg. Tangradi was handed over to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL, the Canadiens' farm team at the time, on the same day . During the season, the attacker came only to seven NHL appearances and spent the rest of the season in the AHL. After the season, his expiring contract was not renewed, so he signed a new one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings in July 2015 . This was extended for two more seasons in March 2016, before winning the Calder Cup in the 2016/17 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the Red Wings farm team . After the 2017/18 season, Tangradi did not get a new contract in Detroit, so he joined the New Jersey Devils as a free agent .

For the 2019/20 season, Tangradi moved to Barys Nur-Sultan in the Continental Hockey League , but returned from there to the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL in December 2019.
