Belleville [ ˈbɛlvɪl ] is a city in Ontario , Canada and has about 49,454 inhabitants (as of 2011).
Belleville is located on Highway 401 between the Canadian cities of Toronto (192 km away) and Montréal (356 km) and about 20 km from Lake Ontario . The capital of Canada, Ottawa , is 140 miles away.
history
The oldest known settlement was the Indian village of Asaukhknosk , which was replaced by a French mission called Kente . Thereafter it was named Thurlow Village , Singleton's Creek, and Meyers' Creek after prominent residents .
The visit of the then Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, Sir Francis Gore and his wife in the spring of 1816 finally inspired the residents to change the name of the settlement in honor of the beautiful woman in Belleville .
economy
Manufacturing is a major part of the city's economy. Several larger international manufacturing companies have their headquarters in Belleville. a. Procter & Gamble , Kellogg's , Streamline Foods, Autosystems, Amer Sports Canada , Sears and Avaya . The city is about a 15-minute drive from Canada's largest military base. The 8th Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force is stationed in the military area of the airport on Canadian Forces Base Trenton (CFB Trenton) . The airport is also open to civil air traffic.
In 1907 the Corby whiskey distillery burned down, but was reconstructed and later became the property of the Hiram Walker company . The most famous whiskey from the Corby distillery is the Royal Reserve .
