Brian Ernest Orser , OC (born December 18, 1961 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian figure skater who started in a single run . He is the world champion of 1987 .

Career

Orser was born in Belleville, Ontario. His parents are JoAnne and Butch Orser, he has four other siblings. His coach was Dough Leigh , who later also formed Elvis Stojko to become world figure skating champion. With Leigh he trained at the Mariposa School of Skating.

After becoming the Canadian beginner and junior champion, Orser won his first senior championship in 1980. Seven more were to follow. In 1981 he made his world championship debut and finished sixth. He won his first world championship medal in 1983 with bronze behind Scott Hamilton and Norbert Schramm .

Orser was known as "Mr. Triple Axel "known. When he became Canadian junior champion in 1979, he was the second figure skater to stand a triple axel at a time when very few seniors even attempted this jump. Over the next few years he showed the triple Axel more often and more consistently than any other figure skater. Orser was the first figure skater to successfully show a triple axel in the Olympics . He succeeded in 1984 in Sarajevo . He won the silver medal behind Scott Hamilton. He also won silver behind the American at the subsequent World Cup . Orser's difficulties in the compulsory figures cost him the gold medal both times.

After Scott Hamilton's resignation, the way was clear for Orser to become the dominant figure skater, but he did not have a perfect world championship in 1985 and was defeated by Alexander Fadejew , who now also had three times Axel in his program. Orser responded and added two triple Axels to his program. At the 1986 World Cup , however, it was only enough to make it runners-up, this time behind Brian Boitano . In 1987 in Cincinnati Orser finally became world champion and went down in history as the first figure skater to have two triple Axels in the freestyle and three in the tournament in total at a world championship.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary , Orser's homeland hosted the “Battle of the Brians”. Orser was unbeaten in the Olympic season until then and had suffered his last defeat at the 1986 World Cup against Boitano. Orser was the flag bearer for Canada at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. In the tournament he placed third in the compulsory figures, first in the short program and second in the freestyle and had to admit defeat to Boitano, as in the subsequent World Cup . Because of his many silver medals he had the reputation of the "Silberling". He forgave himself the victory by a failed triple flip. Boitano was also seen as improved choreographically under Sandra Bezic. He had always reached the podium since 1982.

In 1988 Brian Orser ended his amateur career and turned professional. He toured with Stars on Ice for many years. He had his last appearance there in 2007. Orser won an Emmy for his performance in Carmen on Ice .

In 1985 he was awarded the highest Canadian distinction, Membership In The Order of Canada, and in 1988 he was promoted to Officer of that Order. He was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1995, and finally the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2009 .

In November 1998 Brian Orser was sued for maintenance by his former partner . As a side effect, Orser's homosexuality became public.

In the meantime he also works successfully as a trainer. From 2006 to August 2010 he coached the South Korean Olympic champion Kim Yu-na . In 2011 he became the coach of Javier Fernández López and led him to the top of the world. Since April 2012 he has also looked after the Japanese ice skating star Yuzuru Hanyū and helped him to win the national championships in December 2013.
