Elvis Stojko (born March 22, 1972 in Newmarket , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian figure skater who started in a single run . He is the world champion of 1994 , 1995 and 1997 and the four continents champion of 2000.

Career

Stojko's parents emigrated to Canada in the 1950s. His father came from Slovenia and went to Canada in 1955. His mother, Irene, who was born in Hungary , fled Hungary in 1956 after the Warsaw Pact troops invaded . Elvis Stojko was born in Newmarket , Ontario and grew up in Richmond Hill , Ontario. His parents named him after Elvis Presley. He started ice skating at the age of four and won his first competition at the age of six. He also practiced karate as a child and made it to the black belt at the age of 16 .

At the Olympic Winter Games in 1994 and 1998 , Stojko won the silver medal. In 1994 , 1995 and 1997 he was world champion , and seven times Canadian champion. In 1995 he had to retire from the Canadian Championships due to an ankle injury , but was still set by the Canadian Association for the World Championships. He won these world championships with one of the best performances of his career, despite the injury that had not yet healed.

He was also injured at the 1998 Winter Olympics . He suffered from a groin injury and also had a cold. He was not allowed to take strong painkillers because of the doping regulations. The media were not informed about the injury and illness in advance. For the medal award, Elvis Stojko appeared in sneakers because ice skating was too painful.

At the 1991 World Cup , Elvis Stojko was the first figure skater in the world to show a jump combination with a quadruple and a double jump. In 1997, also at the World Cup , he was the first to show a quadruple-triple combination. In 2002 Stojko became a professional. On August 10, 2006, he announced his retirement from figure skating.

Stojko wrote a book about his career called "Heart and Soul". He is also involved in the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities in Canada. In the Simpsons episode Kill Gil: Vols. 1 & 2 from season 18, Stojko has a guest appearance.

After the men's competition at the Olympic Games in Vancouver 2010 , in which Evan Lysacek won gold in front of Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko , Stojko took the side of Pljuschtschenko and criticized the rating system because it would not rate quadruple jumps highly enough and thus figure skating would take a development it would devalue it as a high-performance sport, which is primarily about technical elements, especially jumps.

On June 20, 2010, Stojko married the Mexican figure skater Gladys Orozco in Las Vegas .
