Takeshi Honda ( Japanese 本田 武 史 , Honda Takeshi ; born March 23, 1981 in Kōriyama , Fukushima Prefecture ) is a former Japanese figure skater who started in a single run . He is the four continents champion in 1999 and 2003.
Career
Honda started training short track with his brother Hiroshi at the age of 9 but soon switched to figure skating . For the fact that he started figure skating quite late, he made great progress quickly. At age 14, he became the youngest Japanese figure skating champion in history. He won a total of six national titles.
His first coach was Hiroshi Nagakubo. He later left Japan for the USA to train with Galina Smijewskaja . From there he again moved to Barrie , Canada to train at the Mariposa School of Skating with Douglas Leigh .
In 1999 Honda won the first four continents championship in Halifax, Canada . He won this title again in Beijing in 2003 .
In 2002 and 2003 , Honda won bronze medals at the world championships . He was the first Japanese figure skater since Minoru Sano in 1977 to win a world championship medal again. At the 2002 Olympics , Honda finished fourth, narrowly missing out on a medal. In 2004 and 2005 he could hardly contest competitions due to injury or had to give up like at the 2005 World Cup . In 2006, the six-time Japanese champion finally ended his career.
