Minoru Sano ( Japanese 佐野 稔 , Sano Minoru ; born June 3, 1955 in Yamanashi Prefecture ) is a former Japanese figure skater who started in a single run .
He was Japanese champion five times in a row from 1972 to 1976 and represented Japan at world championships from 1973 to 1977 . At his last world championship , in 1977, in front of a home audience in Tokyo , he became a national hero when he won the first world championship medal for a Japanese by winning the bronze medal. Until Takeshi Honda also won a bronze medal in 2002 , Sano was the only Japanese man who had succeeded. At the 1976 Olympic Games , he was ninth.
Sano works as a TV commentator and figure skating instructor. Shizuka Arakawa and Yamato Tamura were among his students .
