Daisuke Takahashi ( Japanese 髙 橋 大 輔 , Takahashi Daisuke ; born March 16, 1986 in Kurashiki ) is a Japanese figure skater who starts in a single run . At the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, he became the first male Asian figure skater to win a medal (bronze). In addition, he became the first Asian world champion in the men's competition in 2010 and was also the first male Asian to win the Grand Prix Final in 2012. He is also the four continents champion in 2008 and 2011, as well as five times Japanese champion. In 2014 he ended his competitive career for the time being. On July 1, 2018, he announced his resumption of active competitive status.

Career

In 2002 Takahashi became the first Japanese figure skating junior world champion . His first big success with the seniors in 2007 was winning the runner-up world title in front of a home crowd in Tokyo , behind Brian Joubert . In 2008 he also won the Four Continents Championships . There he set the world records for freestyle and total points that were valid until 2011 .

After a year off injury, he returned to his old strength at the Olympic Games in Vancouver and won the bronze medal behind Evan Lysacek and Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko . It was the first Olympic medal for a Japanese figure skater. At the 2010 World Cup in Turin , Takahashi became the first Japanese to win the men's competition. For his freestyle he used the composition La Strada by Nino Rota .

In February 2011, Takahashi won his second title at the four continents championships in Taipei . As the reigning world champion, Takahashi went to the world championship , which due to the earthquake in Japan did not take place in Tokyo as planned, but in Moscow. After his short program, which did not include a quadruple jump, he was in third place. He had to interrupt his freestyle right at the beginning due to a runners problem. On his first jump, the quadruple toe loop , he noticed the damage, had to stop the jump and took a three-minute break to fix the problem. According to the regulations, he was not allowed to repeat the jump after this break. He took up his freestyle again, did a triple- flip- triple-toe-loop combination and four more triple jumps, but fell on the triple Salchow and got off on the triple Axel . In the end, it was enough for the defending champion to finish fifth. Takahashi had postponed a necessary knee operation in order to defend his title in front of a home crowd. After the World Cup was moved to Moscow, he had to wait even longer.

After the knee operation, the new season began for Takahashi. He won the NHK Trophy and took the silver medal behind Patrick Chan in the Grand Prix final . At the four continents championships as well as at the world championships this result was repeated, with it coming closest to Chan at the world championships. His freestyle for Eddy Louiss ' Blues for Klook was artistically sure as usual. As he intended at the beginning of the season, he again managed to show a clean four-fold toe loop in the competition . However, his flip was underrotated. In the end, Takahashi was 6.45 points short of a faulty Chan. At the end of the season, Takahashi took part in the World Team Trophy , which was held for the second time, for his country . In his native Tokyo he played a major role in Japan's first victory in this competition. He achieved a world record with 94 points in the short program, improved his personal best in freestyle (182.72 points) and overall performance (276.72 points) and won the individual competition ahead of Chan.

After two second places in his Grand Prix competitions, Takahashi became the first Japanese to win the Grand Prix final in Sochi in December 2012 . The Japanese championships he finished second behind Yuzuru Hanyū . Neither in the Four Continents Championships nor in the 2013 World Championships , however, he was able to build on his performance from the Grand Prix final and ended up seventh or sixth without a medal.

After initially retiring from competitive sports in 2014, Takahashi announced his comeback for the 2018/19 season on July 1, 2018 at the age of 32.
