Ilja Alexandrowitsch Kulik ( Russian Илья Александрович Кулик , listen ? / I ; English Ilia Kulik ; born May 23, 1977 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian figure skater who started in a single run . He is the Olympic champion of 1998 and the European Champion of 1995 .
Kulik started figure skating at the age of five. His trainer was Tatiana Tarasova . His career was short but successful. At his first European championship he was the reigning junior world champion in Dortmund and immediately became European champion and at his second world championship in 1996 in Edmonton he was runner-up behind Todd Eldredge . Kulik's greatest triumph came at his first Olympic Games in Nagano in 1998 . There he won the gold medal and immediately ended his amateur career at the age of 20. He then appeared in Stars on Ice and numerous other shows around the world. In 2000, he played the role of ballet dancer Sergei in the film Center Stage by Nicholas Hytner .
Kulik has been married to the Olympic pair skating champion Yekaterina Gordejewa since 2002 and has a daughter with her named Yelisaveta Ilyinichna (born 2001). Today he lives with his daughter, his wife and their daughter Darja, from their marriage to the late Sergei Grinkow , in Newport Beach , California .
