Nikolai Alexandrovich Panin-Kolomenkin ( Russian Николай Александрович Панин-Коломенкин * December 27, 1871 . Jul / 8. January 1872 greg. In Chrenowoje , Voronezh Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 19th January 1956 in Leningrad , Soviet Union ) was a Russian figure skater . He was the only Russian Olympic champion in the Russian Empire.
Career
Despite his rather weak constitution, he was already enthusiastic about sports as a child and was interested in rowing , cycling , athletics and gymnastics . As a mathematics student at the University of St. Petersburg, he first took part in a figure skating competition in 1897, albeit without success. At that time he chose the pseudonym "Panin", presumably from a friend who needed it in order to take part in races undetected by his father. Panin was trained by Alexei Lebedew , who is often referred to as the grandfather of Russian figure skating, and by Alexander Panschin , the first Russian figure skating champion. Panin countered the difficulty that posture problems in curves often lead to falls by wrapping his free foot in towels, the additional weight of which made him easier to keep his balance.
Panin played two European championships . In 1904 in Davos he won the bronze medal and in 1908 in Warsaw the silver medal. In his only figure skating world championship , Panin was runner-up behind Ulrich Salchow in 1903 in his native St. Petersburg .
At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London , the first Olympic Games with figure skating in the program, there were two competitions in men's figure skating, the normal individual race and, unique in Olympic history, the special figure competition . Panin won his domain, the special figure competition, well ahead of the British Arthur Cumming and George Hall-Say . It was the first gold medal for Russia in the Olympics . Panin also took part in the normal individual competition. A controversy arose around which different stories entwine. According to Panin, he was verbally attacked personally by Salchow while he was on duty, which led to an unsuccessful protest by the Russian Federation. A second unsuccessful protest came when two out of five judges put Panin in first place in duty, but three (according to Panin two Swedes and a personal friend of Salchow from Austria) did not. The Russian felt that he was being treated unfairly, did not take part in the freestyle as a protest and let the reigning world champion Ulrich Salchow win without a fight.
Already during his competitive career, Panin was active as a figure skating instructor and even trained his competitors. He also wrote some biographical books and specialist books (the first book appeared in 1910). At national competitions he also acted as a judge.
Panin also took part in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm in shooting. He was eighth in the individual and fourth with the Russian team in the pistol competition over 50 meters.
