Krisztián Ungváry [ ˈkristiaːn ˈuŋɡvaːri ] (born October 30, 1969 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian historian and contemporary historian .

life and work

Ungváry is the son of the writer, publicist and dissident Rudolf Ungváry and his wife Éva Monspart and grew up with his two sisters in Budapest. During his school and university days he won several awards for his historical achievements. In 1993, thanks to a DAAD scholarship , he spent the winter semester in Freiburg im Breisgau , where he got to know the Freiburg military archive.

His work Budapest ostroma ( Eng . The Battle of Budapest), published in 1998, was a bestseller in Hungary . The translations into English and German were received very positively. In Germany he became known in 1999 as a critic of the Wehrmacht exhibition , about the direction of which he criticized in several publications.

Ungváry's primary interest is the political and military history of the 20th century. He is primarily interested in people's relationship to their own history . Hence his interest in the history of uniforms and phaleristics (religious orders). He is himself a collector of militaria and a member of related associations.

Others

Ungváry is a winemaker and recognized taster . He owns a two- hectare winery in the Tokaj wine region in Olaszliszka . In 1998 he won a regional award.
