John Garvin "Johnny" Weir (born July 2, 1984 in Coatesville , Pennsylvania ) is an American figure skater who starts in a single run .

Career

Weir's first passion was equestrian , which he practiced quite successfully as a child. It was only at the age of eleven that he began to take an interest in figure skating . He was inspired by Oksana Bajul , whose Olympic victory in 1994 he watched on television. Before his parents gave him a pair of ice skates for Christmas, he taught himself to roller skate in the basement of his house. Then he tried his hand at ice skating on a frozen grain field behind his house. Eventually he took figure skating lessons from Priscilla Hill at the University of Delaware . His family moved to Newark for this.

Although Weir didn't start figure skating until he was twelve, he made rapid progress. Already in his first week of training he got an axel , a week later a double axel and a month later his first triple jump, a flip. Due to time constraints, he had to give up riding and from now on concentrated on figure skating. Weir achieved his first major success in 2001 when he won the Junior World Championship in front of his compatriot Evan Lysacek . In 2003, Weir moved from the University of Delaware FSC to the Skating Club of New York.

In 2004, Weir became the American champion for the first time . He defended this title in 2005 and 2006. His world championship debut in 2004 he finished in fifth place. In 2004 Weir won his first Grand Prix competitions with victories at the Eric Bompard Trophy and the NHK Trophy . At the World Cup the following year, he improved by one place over the previous year and finished fourth. In 2006 Weir played his first Olympic Games and finished them in fifth place. At the World Cup , he could not improve and finished seventh. In the spring of 2007 Weir left his long-time coach Priscilla Hill and moved to New Jersey to Halyna Smijewska , who had already led Wiktor Petrenko and Oksana Bajul to the Olympic title. The reason he gave was that he needed someone who could drive him and that Priscilla Hill had become a kind of "surrogate mother" for him.

The 2007/2008 season was extremely successful for Weir. After two victories in Grand Prix competitions - Cup of China and Cup of Russia - where he also defeated two-time world champion Stéphane Lambiel , Weir won his first and only medal at world championships with bronze in Gothenburg .

The following year Weir could not qualify for the World Cup. In 2010 he came back and finished sixth at the Olympic Games in Vancouver . He was attacked by PETA and the Friends of Animals because of his ice skating costume with fox fur applications. Because of the threats from animal rights activists , he put faux fur on his costume, but emphasized that wearing fur was a "personal choice". He asked if the activists knew that all ice skaters wore leather shoes. The activists' threats also forced Weir to move homes during the Olympics.

Personal

Johnny Weir was born in Coatesville , Pennsylvania to John and Patti Weir and grew up in Quarryville , Pennsylvania. He has a brother who is four years his junior.

Weir briefly studied linguistics at the University of Delaware and admires Russian culture and figure skating style. He collects Cheburashka fan articles.

He is Roman Catholic but describes himself as open to other belief systems, including practicing Kabbalah . "I believe in all good things and everything that love can teach and I feel that all of these things protect me."

Weir is interested in fashion and has already designed some costumes himself, also for other figure skaters, such as. B. Yuzuru Hanyu .

James Pellerito and David Barba filmed him from 2006 to spring 2008. The documentary Pop Star on Ice premiered on May 24, 2009 at the Seattle International Film Festival , screened at various film festivals in the United States until the summer of 2009 and broadcast on December 24, 2009 on the Sundance Channel (USA). From January to March 2010, the multi-part reality show Be Good Johnny Weir was broadcast on the same station . From the end of January and from mid-2011, two more seasons will be broadcast in Logo .

In 2010 the asteroid (12413) Johnnyweir , which was discovered by TW Kryachenko in 1995, was named after Weir. His Russian fans had made this suggestion.

During the 2010 Olympic Games, two Canadian commentators were critical of Weir's effeminate and flamboyant behavior and expressed concern that it could damage the reputation of men's figure skating. Weir was annoyed by the comments.

In early 2011, Weir published his autobiography Welcome to my World . In December 2010 the song Dirty Love (author: Lucian Piane ) could already be heard on his website. At the same time as the book, the song is also available in the online shops. Shortly thereafter, it was number one on the sales charts of the Japanese Amazon website and number 22 on the iTunes Japan Dance charts .

Weir's sexual orientation has long been the subject of media speculation. Weir often replied to such questions with “… it's not part of my sport and it's private. I can sleep with who I choose and it doesn't affect what I do on the ice. ” In his autobiography Welcome to my World , in which he finally confessed himself to be homosexual , he cited the increased suicides among young homosexuals as the reason for this : "In the face of people who kill themselves and hide their homosexuality in fear, I hope that at least one person can draw strength from my story."

On New Year's Eve 2011, Johnny Weir married his partner Viktor Voronov, an American lawyer of Russian origin. The two divorced in 2015. They cited "domestic difficulties" as reasons.

In September 2019, Weir took part as Egg in the second season of the US offshoot of The Masked Singer and was eliminated as the first candidate.
