Nathaniel Niles (figure skater)

Nathaniel William Niles (born July 5, 1886 in Boston , Massachusetts , † July 11, 1932 in Brookline , Massachusetts) was an American figure skater and tennis player .

Niles started in figure skating both individually and in pairs .

In 1918, 1925 and 1927 he was the American champion in men's singles. He took part in three Olympic Games in a single run . He was sixth in Antwerp in 1920 , sixth again in Chamonix in 1924 and 15th in St. Moritz in 1928. In 1928 he also competed in his only world championship in the individual race , finishing it in tenth and last place.

In pair skating , Niles became American champions together with Theresa Weld in 1918 and from 1920 to 1927 . Here, too, he took part in three Olympic Games , in 1920 the skating pair finished fourth, in 1924 sixth and in 1928 ninth. You contested three world championships . They finished seventh in 1928 , sixth in 1930 and eighth in 1932 . Along with Blanchard, Niles also won five national ice dance titles .

Niles was also a good tennis player . With Edith Rotch he won the mixed title at the US Open in 1908 . In 1917 he lost the final in the men's singles against Lindley Murray in four sets at the US Open . Niles was inducted into the New England Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000.
