history
Saad Mohseni, a bank employee from exile in Australia, founded the country's first private radio station with his two brothers in Kabul: Arman FM. In 2004 the television station Tolo TV followed , which today has a market share of over 50 percent. A good half of the capital required to set up the company came from a $ 230,000 loan from the US government agency - the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
The first successes were recorded in 2004 with the satirical program Zang e Khatar (alarm bell), in which jokes were made about government failures and members of parliament and made political satire socially acceptable in Afghanistan. The most successful Tolo TV show was Afghan Star, the Afghan version of Germany is looking for the superstar . Up to twelve million viewers, over a third of the population, saw these programs on average.
