At the age of five, Eldredge bought ice hockey skates, but switched to figure skates within two weeks because he wanted to jump and spin. He left home when he was ten to train with Richard Callaghan .
In 1988 Eldredge became World Junior Champion. He won his first of a total of six titles at the US championships in 1990. In 1991 he stood on the podium for the first time at a world championship. He won bronze behind Kurt Browning and Wiktor Petrenko . He finished his first Olympic Games in 1992 in tenth place. In 1995 he was runner-up behind Elvis Stojko . A year later, at the World Championships in Edmonton , he won his only world championship title. In the next two years he was vice world champion, the first time again behind Elvis Stojko and the second time behind the aspiring Alexei Jagudin . He narrowly missed an Olympic medal in Nagano in 1998, finishing fourth. After two years without competition, he returned in 2001 and won his last world championship medal with bronze. In 2002 he played his third and final Olympic Games . He finished sixth. He then ended his long career and toured with Stars on Ice. In 2008 he was inducted into the national Hall of Fame.
He married Megan McCrea on September 3, 2005 in St. Petersburg , Florida , but, as he revealed in an interview on March 1, 2009, is considered divorced.
