Vincent Zhou (born October 25, 2000 in San José , California ) is an American figure skater who starts in a single run .

Career

Vincent Zhou won the title at the US Junior Championships in 2015. In 2017 he became Junior World Champion in Taipei . This year he also reached the podium at the US Seniors Championships for the first time with second place .

Third place in the national championships behind Nathan Chen and Ross Miner ensured him participation in the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang the following year . There the strong jumping Californian reached sixth place on his debut with personal best points in both segments as well as the overall performance.

On his world championship debut in Milan , Zhou showed the technically highest rated short program of the competition. To the music of Chasing Cars he successfully landed a quadruple Lutz triple toeloop combination, a quadruple flip and a triple axel ; in addition, all of his pirouettes received level 4, the highest rating. The bronze rank that Zhou was after the short program, he could not defend, despite the great chance of a medal due to the mistakes of the competition. In his freestyle he tried six quadruple jumps, but fell three times. Six of his eight jump elements were rated as underrotated and one jumped off incorrectly. The only 19th best freestyle made him drop from third to 14th overall.

After a moderate Grand Prix season, Vincent Zhou went into 2019 as US runner-up behind Nathan Chen. At the Four Continents Championships in Anaheim , he won his first bronze medal at an international senior championship. At the world championship in Saitama he also won his first world championship medal with bronze. With the exception of three jumps classified as underrotated, Zhou made no mistakes. In the artistic part, too, he was greatly improved. With Nathan Chen's World Championship victory, the US men managed to secure two podium places at a World Championship for the first time since 1996 ( Todd Eldredge , Rudy Galindo ).
