Akiko Suzuki ( Japanese 鈴木 明子 , Suzuki Akiko ; born March 28, 1985 in Toyohashi , Aichi Prefecture ) is a Japanese figure skater who starts in a single run .
Career
When Suzuki had to leave her home country at the age of 18 to study at university, she fell ill with anorexia . Her weight fell to 32 kg. This made jumping impossible and she missed the entire 2003/04 season. After stabilizing her weight again and being inspired by Shizuka Arakawa's title win at the 2004 World Cup, she returned.
Until 2010, due to the enormous competition in their own country, Suzuki did not manage to reach the podium at the national championships and thus to qualify for major international tournaments. She went into 2010 as the Japanese runner-up. She won the silver medal at the Four Continents Championships in Jeonju. She finished her world championship debut in eleventh place. She finished eighth in her Olympic debut .
In her second World Championship participation, the 27-year-old Suzuki won her first medal at world championships with bronze in Nice in 2012 .
