World Team Trophy
The World Team Trophy is a figure skating team competition organized by the International Skating Union to mark the end of the figure skating season.
history
Traditionally, the World Figure Skating Championship ended the season. The World Team Trophy was launched in 2008 with the aim of encouraging nations to promote figure skaters in all four disciplines. The World Team Trophy was first held in April 2009 in the Yoyogi National Sports Hall in Tokyo . The USA won the first team competition. The prize money in 2009 was one million US dollars, the highest prize money in an ISU competition. The winning nation got $ 200,000.
mode
Each of the six best nations of the season sends two men, two women, a pair of skating and an ice dancing pair . For each placement there are points, for first place 12 points, for second place 11 points, for third place 10 points, etc., so that the last individual runner gets one point and the last pair skating and ice dancing pair 7 points.
Until the third edition of the competition in 2013, this point was awarded on the basis of the combined overall result from the results of the short program and freestyle. Since 2015, the points for the short program and the freestyle have been awarded separately. The maximum number of points that a team can achieve doubled from 70 to 140 points.
Participating Nations
So far (as of 2019) only seven nations have each participated in the World Team Trophy. France, Japan, Canada, Russia and the USA were present at every event. China was represented four times and Italy twice. So far, the winners have come exclusively from the USA or Japan.
