Willie Jones (singer)

Willie Jones (* 1936 in Detroit , Michigan , full name Willie Cornelius Jones ) is an American R&B singer and songwriter. His voice is compared to that of Clyde McPhatter ( Dominoes , Drifters ).

life and work

As a teenager Willie Jones sang in a choir, then around 1950 in a vocal group called "The Five Willows". In 1954 he joined the Royal Jokers , with whom he recorded their hit You Tickle Me Baby (1955).

After the death of their manager Al Green in 1957, the Royal Jokers went through a difficult phase with several personnel changes. Willie Jones also left the group and began a solo career. In 1959 his first single Fast Choo Choo was released . In total, Jones released four solo singles on various labels , all of which were only regionally successful. His best known piece is probably Where's My Money from 1962.

In 1963 Jones returned to the Royal Jokers and they re-recorded their first hit, You Tickle Me Baby . In 1966 Love Game (From A To Z) was a hit in Detroit, but otherwise received little attention. Again Jones left the Royal Jokers to join another group called "The 21st".

1996 Willie Jones appeared again with the remaining Royal Jokers. In 2009, Cat King Kole released The Royal Jokers Featuring Willie Jones: Complete Work .
