Mervin Tran (born September 22, 1990 in Regina , Saskatchewan , Canada ) is a Canadian figure skater who starts in pair skating . He started for Japan until 2012 .

Career

Mervin Tran was born in Regina . His parents are refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia . They encouraged him to go to ice hockey . By chance he got into figure skating at a hockey camp at the age of four. At the age of 13 he got his first triple salchow . In 2007 Richard Gauthier was looking for a pair of skiers as a partner for the Japanese Narumi Takahashi. Trans trainer Bruno Marcotte recommended Tran, who was originally a single runner. After a trial with Takahashi, Tran stayed with Gauthier in Montreal . They train together in St. Leonard and are supported by the Japanese Figure Skating Association.

In 2008, Takahashi and Tran became Japanese champions in pair skating for the first time. In 2010 and 2011 they stood on the podium at junior world championships . In 2010 they made their debut at four continents championships and in 2011 at world championships .

At the 2012 World Championships in Nice , Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran surprisingly won the bronze medal. It was the first World Cup medal for Japan in pair skating.

The couple split after the 2011/12 season. 2013-14 ran Tran with Natasha Purich , with whom he started for Canada. He has been working for the USA with Marissa Castelli since 2015 .
