The 108th World Figure Skating Championships took place from March 19-25 at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan . The International Skating Union announced the location of the title fights in April 2016. After the World Cup in 1951, Milan hosted the world championships for the second time. It was the fourth event on Italian soil after Milan in 1951, Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1963 and Turin in 2010 .
As usual in an Olympic season, numerous figure skaters canceled their participation or ended their careers. So none of the defending champions did not compete.

Olympic champion and defending champion Yuzuru Hanyū canceled his participation due to his injury to his right ankle that had not yet healed. The bronze medalist of the Olympic Games, Javier Fernández , did not participate either. Patrick Chan ended his career after the Olympics. Even Adam Rippon and Denis Ten declared their non-participation.
In contrast to the Olympic Games, Nathan Chen managed to complete his short program for Benjamin Clementine's song Nemesis without falling. Although he struggled with his quadruple Lutz triple toe loop combination and his quadruple flip , which led to slight deductions in the degree of execution, the triple Axel in particular did not cause him any problems. Overall, he took the lead in the short program with 101.94 points. When Chen was the last of the starting field to go to Mao's last dancer and Le sacre du printemps in his freestyle , he already knew that all of his competitors had failed. So were Shoma Uno , Mikhail Koljada and Jin Boyang fallen several times and the latter even dropped back to 19th place. Nevertheless, Chen did not simplify his freestyle and showed six quadruple jumps, all of which he successfully landed and for which, apart from the quadruple Salchow and the quadruple-triple-toe loop combination, he also received clearly positive ratings in terms of execution level. For example, he got 2.14 plus points for his fourfold Lutz, which opened the freestyle. In the end, his freestyle, the only fall-free in the last group, brought him a triumphant victory of over 47 points, by far the largest advantage a world champion had since the introduction of the new points system at the world championships in 2005.
Despite three falls, Shōma Uno was able to improve from fifth place in the short program to silver. For Mikhail Koljada , bronze was enough to win his first World Cup medal. World Cup debutant Vincent Zhou , who had run the competition's short program with the highest technical rating, fell back from bronze to 14th place due to an equally flawed freestyle.
