Aliona Savchenko , originally Ukrainian Олена Валентинівна Савченко , Olena Walentyniwna Savchenko (* 19th January 1984 in Obukhiv , Kiev Oblast , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian - German figure skater , in the pairs figure skating starts. She became Olympic champion for Germany at the 2018 Olympic Games together with Bruno Massot and was world champion for the sixth time at the 2018 World Championships in Milan. With her former figure skating partner Robin Szolkowy , she won the world championship five times, the European championship four times and two Olympic bronze medals.
Career start in Ukraine (until 2002)
Aljona Savchenko started ice skating with her father on a frozen lake when she was three years old. When she was four years old, her father wanted to enroll her in a figure skating school in Kiev for training. There he was told that she was still too young and that she should come back in a year.
Her first partner in pair skating was Dmytro Bojenko. With him she started for Ukraine and for Dynamo Kiev. Your trainer was Oleksandr Artychenko. The couple split in 1998 after the Junior World Championships .
From then on she ran together with Stanislaw Morosow . You started for Dynamo Kiev and therefore for Ukraine. The couple became junior world champions in 2000. Her trainer was Halina Kuchar.
With Robin Szolkowy for Germany (2003-2014)
After separating from Stanislaw Morosow in 2002, Savchenko was looking for a new partner worldwide and found him in Robin Szolkowy . She moved to Germany in 2003 and then trained with Ingo Steuer in Chemnitz . The couple won the German championship in 2004 straight away.
2004/2005
At the Cup of Russia , Savchenko and Szolkowy had their Grand Prix debut in Moscow in November 2004 and finished it on the bronze rank. In 2005, the reigning German pair skating champions had their joint debut at World and European Championships , which they finished sixth and fourth respectively .
2005/2006
In October 2005, they won their first Grand Prix competition with Skate Canada and thus qualified for their first Grand Prix final , which they concluded by winning the bronze medal. Your first medal at a major international championship followed in January 2006. You were runner-up in Lyon behind the Russians Tatjana Totmjanina and Maxim Marinin . Aljona Savchenko had received German citizenship on December 29, 2005 and thus the figure skating couple could now take part in their first joint Olympic Games . However, participation was made considerably more difficult because of the Stasi allegations against their trainer Ingo Steuer . Steuer had been excluded from the Olympic team and had to fight for participation in court. Savchenko and Szolkowy finished their Olympic debut in Turin in sixth place despite all the quarrels. They repeated this result at the subsequent World Cup .
The Ministry of the Interior continued to put pressure on the German skating association because of the Stasi tax past. As a result, Steuer should not get accreditation for the upcoming tournaments; but the judiciary agreed with the tax. Nevertheless, the further cooperation with Steuer cost Robin Szolkowy his employment with the armed forces and their financial support. This was offset by private sponsors and fans, so that the couple could continue their careers.
2006/2007
Sportily unimpressed by the quarrels, Savchenko and Szolkowy won the Cup of Russia in November 2006 and qualified again for the Grand Prix final , where they won the silver medal. On January 24, 2007, they became European champions in Warsaw . In doing so, they distanced the Russian silver medalists Marija Petrowa and Alexei Tichonow by almost twenty points. It was the first European championship title for a German couple since their coach Ingo Steuer and partner Mandy Wötzel had won in 1995 . At the world championship in Tokyo they won their first world championship medal with bronze behind the two Chinese couples Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo as well as Pang Qing and Tong Jian . It was the first medal of a German couple at a world championship since the bronze medal of Peggy Schwarz and Mirko Müller in 1998 .
2007/2008
The 2007-08 season turned out to be one of the most successful seasons for the figure skating couple. They won at Skate Canada and the NHK Trophy , thus qualifying for the Grand Prix final and winning it for the first time. This made them the only German couple after Mandy Wötzel and Ingo Steuer to win the Grand Prix final. At the German Championships on January 6, 2008 Savchenko and Szolkowy broke through the 200-point mark for the first time with 214.67 points. This would have meant a world record, but national championships are not included in the rating of the International Skating Union . In January 2008, they defended their title at the European Championships in Zagreb and now officially exceeded the 200-point mark. They were almost 33 points ahead of the second-placed Russians Marija Muchortowa and Maxim Trankow . In March 2008 Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy became world champions for the first time in Gothenburg . They relegated the Chinese Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao , who were still in the lead after the short program, to second place. It was the first world championship title for a German couple since Mandy Wötzel and Ingo Steuer in 1997 in Lausanne .
2008/2009
The 2008-09 season began with wins at Skate America and the Eric Bompard Trophy . In the Grand Prix final , however, it was only enough for a bronze medal. After Savchenko and Szolkowy had become German pair skating champions for the sixth time in a row, they won the European Championship in Helsinki for the third time in a row in January 2009 . Two months later in Los Angeles they both managed to win the gold medal again at the World Cup . They won both the short program and the freestyle and, with their personal best, were almost 17 points ahead of the Chinese Zhang / Zhang . Savchenko and Szolkowy were the first German couple since Marika Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler ( 1963 and 1964 ) to successfully defend their world title.
2009/2010
The 2009/10 season was the most problematic of her career. After they had won the short program at the Trophée Eric Bompard , but made numerous serious mistakes in the freestyle, which threw them back to third place, coach Ingo Steuer suggested that their planned freestyle for "You'll Never Walk Alone" be discarded and to create a new one. Although they had been working on it since May of last year, they were not comfortable with this freestyle. Savchenko said that the freestyle just didn't suit them. The new freestyle was choreographed to the Out of Africa film music .
At Skate Canada they won both the short program and the freestyle with a new world point record. It was the first time that a judge gave the highest mark of 10.0 in the new evaluation system . At the Grand Prix final , however, it was again only enough for the bronze medal. In addition, Aljona Savchenko caught the flu during the competition and the couple did not compete in the German championships.
The European Championships in Turin ended Savchenko and Szolkowy with a personal best of 211.72 points. Nevertheless, this was not enough to defend the title. The Russians Juko Kawaguti and Alexander Smirnow surprisingly won the title by one and a half points.
The couple's second Olympic Games began in Vancouver with a personal best of 75.96 points in the short program. However, this did not bring them victory in the short program, as the returning Chinese Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo set a new world record with 76.66 points. Because of a botched double axel by Szolkowy and a toe loop by Savchenko who only jumped twice in the freestyle, they also fell behind the second Chinese pair, Pang Qing and Tong Jian , and thus won the bronze medal. Trainer Ingo Steuer commented on this with the following words: “The gold is gone, nothing else matters. I'm pissed off. It's so sad that you didn't take what was on the tray. We should have just done it. ”Steuer was criticized in the media for his public criticism of his figure skating protégés.
At the World Cup , Savchenko and Szolkowy won the silver medal behind Pang Qing and Tong Jian.
2010/2011
After appearing in 15 shows, Savchenko and Szolkowy started the 2010/11 season with sovereign victories at Skate America and the Eric Bompard Trophy . They also won the Grand Prix final , for the second time in their career. Participation seemed to be at risk when her luggage was lost on the plane on the way back from the Trophée Eric Bompard in France, and with it the specially designed skates. These may not be carried in hand luggage as they count as potential weapons. However, the airline found the skates a few days later.
At the European Championships in Bern , Savchenko and Szolkowy won back their European title, which they lost last year, from the Russians Kawaguti and Smirnow .
The highlight at the end of the season was the World Cup in Tokyo. After the earthquake in Japan on March 11, 2011 and the severe consequences it caused (including the series of accidents at the Fukushima I nuclear power plant ), the World Cup could not take place at the end of March as planned. Savchenko and Szolkowy as well as their trainer Ingo Steuer announced that in view of the disaster it would be difficult to imagine participating in a possible event in Japan. However, the ISU moved the World Cup to Moscow , where it took place over a month later. A problem arose from the fact that the ice age of Savchenko and Szolkowy's training hall in Chemnitz is limited to the end of March. However, a solution was found to make the hall usable until Easter. The resulting costs, around 40,000 euros, were shared by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Saxon Ministry of Culture and the City of Chemnitz.
At the World Championships in Moscow , Savchenko and Szolkowy moved from second to first place thanks to their neatly executed freestyle to the music of the pink panther and thus won the world championship title for the third time, more often than any other German couple in post-war history. Both the score of 144.87 for the freestyle as well as the total score of 217.85 meant a new world record . Savchenko and Szolkowy thus won all competitions in the 2010/2011 season in which they competed.
2011/2012
In the 2011/12 season, Savchenko and Szolkowy won the Grand Prix final for the third time after 2007/08 and 2010/11 , this time ahead of the Russian couple Tatiana Wolossoshar and Maxim Trankow . After a torn muscle fiber in Savchenko's left thigh on January 19, 2012, the couple were unable to take part in the European Championships in Sheffield at the end of January and defend their title despite having already traveled there . This went to the Russians Wolossoschar / Trankow. At the end of March 2012, however, the German figure skating couple was able to take part in the World Championships in Nice . Already after the short program, in which Savchenko and Szolkowy had successfully shown a triple throwing axel for the first time, they took the lead. They did not give up this after their new type of freestyle, which was inspired by the dance theater Pina Bausch , despite two major mistakes and won the world championship title for the fourth time with an extremely narrow margin of 0.11 points over their Russian rivals. In doing so, they set the German title record of Maxi Herber and Ernst Baier , who also won four world championships between 1936 and 1939. In the pair skating history, only Irina Rodnina and Alexander Saizew (six titles) were more often victorious at world championships .
2012/2013
The 2012/13 season began with a win at Skate Canada , although Szolkowy started with a flu. However , Savchenko and Szolkowy had to cancel their participation in the Eric Bompard Trophy due to their illness, which had developed into sinusitis, and were therefore unable to qualify for the Grand Prix final .
Savchenko and Szolkowy received criticism early in the season for the selection of their music, the Boléro , which is often used in figure skating, and their overly colorful costumes, which a designer studio in Chemnitz had designed.
Good news at the start of the season, however, was the signing of a three-year contract with the first major sponsor of her career, the investment company ThomasLloyd in Berlin. Szolkowy commented: “Knowing that we can focus on training and competition alone is a good feeling. We don't necessarily have to take care of the finances every month. "
At the European Championships in Zagreb and the World Championships in London , Canada , Savchenko and Szolkowy had to be satisfied with the silver medal behind their competitors Tatjana Wolossoschar and Maxim Trankow . In the process, they also lost their world points records in freestyle and overall performance to the Russians.
2013/2014
At the Olympic Games in Sochi , she won the bronze medal again with Szolkowy. After winning the 2014 World Cup , her partner ended his career.
With Bruno Massot for Germany (since 2014)
In April 2014, Savchenko started training with Bruno Massot . On September 28, 2014, your new partner declared in writing that he would be changing from the French to the German association and intended to apply for German citizenship. From October 2014 she trained with Massot in Oberstdorf under the trainer Alexander König . The approval for Massot only took place in November 2015 in return for a payment of 30,000 euros to the French Ice Sports Association .
2015/2016
The first joint competition ended with a victory at the Tallinn Trophy on November 19, 2015.
At the European Championships in Bratislava, the pair immediately won the silver medal with 200.78 points. They just had to admit defeat to the superior Olympic champions Wolossoschar / Trankov, who celebrated a comeback. In the freestyle, Massot stumbled on the last two lifts and even had to drop Savchenko once.
The 2016 World Championships took place in Boston. Savchenko was the oldest participant in all of the title fights. Despite the early start number ten, the couple managed to secure fourth place after the short program and thus the last start group for the freestyle after minor uncertainties. After the Canadian defending champions Duhamel / Radford ran flawlessly to gold, Savchenko and Massot managed a very good freestyle with only one clear mistake. The sometimes massive mistakes of the Russian competition surprisingly secured them the bronze medal behind the Chinese Sui / Han. After the result was known, Savchenko was in tears of joy for minutes in a row. It was her ninth World Cup medal.
A special trademark of the couple is the extremely high throwing twist. Maximum difficulties such as the triple throwing ax or quadruple throws were planned for the coming season.
She has been a sports soldier since 2015 , with the Bundeswehr Sports Promotion Group .
2016/2017: Vice European Champion and Vice World Champion
At the beginning of the season they won the Nebelhorn Trophy and the Grand Prix in Russia and France, but Savchenkos injured himself during the freestyle in France. As a result, they canceled their participation in the Grand Prix Final and took a break from training for several weeks. After taking third place in the short program of the European Championships, Savchenko / Massot showed an impressive freestyle with which they pushed themselves up to second place. They also achieved this at the subsequent World Championships, where they ended up just behind the victorious Chinese Sui Wenjing and Han Cong .
2017/2018: Olympic victory and world championship title
After winning the Grand Prix final in December 2017, Savchenko and Massot went to the 2018 Olympic Games as gold candidates . Above all, Savchenko formulated the goal of winning the Olympic gold medal, also publicly in advance, after she had missed this title in the last two events.
In Pyeongchang , the couple initially took part as a “dress rehearsal” in the team competition , which is considered to be of secondary importance . After Savchenko fell in the triple throw flip, both took third place in the short program, and the team came in seventh in the final score.
In the pair run five days later, Massot only jumped the Salchow twice instead of three times in the short program , which was accompanied by a loss of more than four points. After the short program, the figure skating couple was initially in fourth place. The gap to the leading Chinese Sui Wenjing and Han Cong was more than five points, and Olympic victory seemed a long way off. The next day, however, Savchenko and Massot shone with a faultless freestyle, which was rated with a new world record number of 159.31 points. After the subsequent competition showed weaknesses in the freestyle, the Germans were able to secure the Olympic victory with less than half a point ahead with this performance.
In March 2018, Savchenko / Massot became world champions together for the first time in Milan. For Savchenko it was already the 6th world title, for Massot the first.
Show career
In the 2018/19 season, Savchenko / Massot only appeared in commercial shows in connection with a break from competition. These included "Ice Fantasia" in Korea, "Plushenko and friends" in Italy, "Fantasy on ice" in Japan, "Music in ice" and "Art on ice" in Switzerland, as well as "Concert on ice", " Emotions on ice "and" Holiday on ice "in Germany.
Private life
