Robin Szolkowy [ ʃɔlˈkoːviː ] (born July 14, 1979 in Greifswald ) is a former German figure skater in pair skating and current coach and sports official. With his figure skating partner Aljona Savchenko he was five times world and four times European champion .

Life

Robin Szolkowy was born in Greifswald. His mother, a nurse, met his father, a Tanzanian medical student, when he was studying in Greifswald. Although Szolkowy knew his father from pictures, there was no meeting until March 2008. When Szolkowy was four years old, his mother moved with him to Erfurt , where he began figure skating with Ilona Schindler . At first he was a single runner like his training colleagues Silvio Smalun and Stefan Lindemann , but switched to pair skating at the age of 16 .

Pair skating career

Robin Szolkowy and Aljona Savchenko with their trainer Ingo Steuer

Szolkowy's first partner was Johanna Otto. In 1997 he started with Claudia Rauschenbach , the daughter of Anett Pötzsch , and became German pair skating champion with her in 2001 . The couple trained with Monika Scheibe in Chemnitz and competed for the Chemnitz Ice Skating Club . When Rauschenbach ended her career, Szolkowy remained without a partner for a year and a half and kept fit with synchronized figure skating with the Chemnitz formation Skating Mystery , until Ingo Steuer recommended that he try it with the junior world champion in pair skating from 2000, the Ukrainian Aljona Savchenko . Her trial training in May 2003 in Chemnitz was successful. Three months later, Savchenko moved to Germany and the figure skating couple now trained under Ingo Steuer. Savchenko and Szolkowy won the German championship straight away in 2004 .

2004/2005 season

At the Cup of Russia , Savchenko and Szolkowy had their Grand Prix debut in Moscow in November 2004 and finished it on the bronze rank.

In 2005, the reigning German pair skating champions had their joint debut at World and European Championships , which they finished sixth and fourth respectively .

2005/2006 season

In October 2005, they won their first Grand Prix competition with Skate Canada and thus qualified for their first Grand Prix final , which they concluded by winning the bronze medal.

Your first medal at a major international championship followed in January 2006. You were runner-up in Lyon behind the Russians Tatjana Totmjanina and Maxim Marinin .

Aljona Savchenko had received German citizenship on December 29, 2005 and so the figure skating couple could now take part in their first joint Olympic Games . However, participation was made considerably more difficult because of the Stasi allegations against their trainer Ingo Steuer . Steuer had been excluded from the Olympic team and had to fight for participation in court. Savchenko and Szolkowy finished their Olympic debut in Turin in sixth place despite all the quarrels. They repeated this result at the subsequent World Cup .

The Ministry of the Interior continued to put pressure on the German skating association because of the Stasi tax past. As a result, Steuer was not supposed to be accredited for the upcoming tournaments, but the judiciary agreed that Steuer was right. Nevertheless, the further cooperation with Steuer cost Robin Szolkowy his employment with the armed forces and the financial support. This was offset by private sponsors and fans, so the couple could go on.

2006/2007 season

Unimpressed by sport, Savchenko and Szolkowy won the Cup of Russia in November 2006 and again qualified for the Grand Prix final , where they won the silver medal.

On January 24, 2007, they became European champions in Warsaw . In doing so, they distanced the Russian silver medalists Marija Petrowa and Alexei Tichonow by almost 20 points. It was the first European championship title for a German couple since their coach Ingo Steuer and partner Mandy Wötzel had won in 1995 .

At the world championship in Tokyo they won their first world championship medal with bronze behind the two Chinese couples Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo as well as Pang Qing and Tong Jian . It was the first medal of a German couple at a world championship since the bronze medal of Peggy Schwarz and Mirko Müller in 1998 .

2007/2008 season

The 2007/08 season was the figure skating couple's most successful season to date. It won Skate Canada and the NHK Trophy , qualifying for the Grand Prix final and winning it for the first time. This made them the only German couple after Mandy Wötzel and Ingo Steuer to win the Grand Prix final.

At the German Championships on January 6, 2008 Savchenko and Szolkowy broke through the 200-point mark for the first time with 214.67 points. This would have meant a world record, but national championships are not included in the rating of the International Skating Union .

In January 2008, they defended their title at the European Championships in Zagreb and now officially exceeded the 200-point mark. They were almost 33 points ahead of the second-placed Russians Marija Muchortowa and Maxim Trankow .

In March 2008 Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy became world champions for the first time in Gothenburg . They relegated the Chinese Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao , who were still in the lead after the short program, to second place. It was the first world championship title for a German couple since Mandy Wötzel and Ingo Steuer in 1997 in Lausanne .

Savchenko and Szolkowy at the Nebelhorn Trophy 2008

2008/2009 season

The 2008-09 season began with wins at Skate America and the Eric Bompard Trophy . In the Grand Prix final , however, it was only enough for a bronze medal.

After Savchenko and Szolkowy had become German pair skating champions for the sixth time in a row, they won the European Championship in Helsinki for the third time in a row in January 2009 .

Two months later in Los Angeles they both managed to win the gold medal again at the World Cup . They won both the short program and the freestyle and, with their personal best, were almost 17 points ahead of the Chinese Zhang / Zhang . Savchenko and Szolkowy were the first German couple since Marika Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler ( 1963 and 1964 ) to successfully defend their world title.

2009/2010 season

The 2009/10 season was the most problematic of her career. After they had won the short program at the Trophée Eric Bompard , but made numerous serious mistakes in the freestyle, which threw them back to third place, coach Ingo Steuer suggested that their planned freestyle for "You'll Never Walk Alone" be discarded and to create a new one. Although they had been working on it since May 2008, they were not comfortable with this freestyle. Savchenko said that the freestyle just didn't suit them. The new freestyle was choreographed to the Out of Africa film music . At Skate Canada they won both the short program and the freestyle with a new world point record. It was the first time that a judge gave the highest mark of 10.0 in the new evaluation system . At the Grand Prix final , however, it was again only enough for the bronze medal. In addition, Aljona Savchenko got the flu during the competition and the couple could not compete in the German championships.

The European Championships in Turin ended Savchenko and Szolkowy with a personal best of 211.72 points. Nevertheless, this was not enough to defend the title. The Russians Juko Kawaguti and Alexander Smirnow surprisingly won the title by one and a half points.

The couple's second Olympic Games began in Vancouver with a personal best of 75.96 points in the short program. However, this did not bring them victory in the short program, as the returning Chinese Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo set a new world record with 76.66 points. Because of a botched double axel by Szolkowy and a toe loop by Savchenko who only jumped twice in the freestyle, they also fell behind the second Chinese pair, Pang Qing and Tong Jian , and thus won the bronze medal. Trainer Ingo Steuer commented on this with the following words: “The gold is gone, nothing else matters. I'm pissed off. It's so sad that you didn't take what was on the tray. We should have just done it. ” Steuer was criticized in the media for his public criticism of his figure skating protégés.

At the World Cup , Savchenko and Szolkowy won the silver medal behind Pang Qing and Tong Jian.

2010/2011 season

Savchenko and Szolkowy during their Pink Panther freestyle at the EM 2011

After appearing in 15 shows, Savchenko and Szolkowy started the 2010/11 season with sovereign victories at Skate America and the Eric Bompard Trophy . They also won the Grand Prix final , for the second time in their career. Participation seemed to be in jeopardy when her luggage was lost on the plane on the way back from the Trophée Eric Bompard in France and with it the skates specially designed for her. These must not be carried in hand luggage as they count as potential weapons. However, the airline found the skates a few days later.

At the European Championships in Bern , Savchenko and Szolkowy took back their European title, which they had lost last year, from the Russians Kawaguti and Smirnow . The highlight at the end of the season was the World Cup in Tokyo. After the earthquake in Japan on March 11, 2011 and the severe consequences it caused (including the Fukushima nuclear disaster ), the World Cup could not take place at the end of March as planned. Savchenko and Szolkowy as well as their trainer Ingo Steuer announced that in view of the disaster it would be difficult to imagine participating in a possible event in Japan. However, the ISU moved the World Cup to Moscow , where it took place over a month later. A problem arose from the fact that the ice age of Savchenko and Szolkowy's training hall in Chemnitz is limited to the end of March. However, a solution was found to make the hall usable until Easter. The resulting costs, around 40,000 euros, were shared by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Saxon Ministry of Culture and the City of Chemnitz. At the World Championships in Moscow , Savchenko and Szolkowy moved from second to first place with their neatly executed freestyle to the music of "The Pink Panther" and thus won the world championship title for the third time, more often than any other German couple in post-war history. Both the number of points for the freestyle, 144.87, and the total number of points of 217.85 meant a new world record . Savchenko and Szolkowy thus won all competitions in the 2010/2011 season in which they competed.

Savchenko and Szolkowy with their much-acclaimed Pina-Bausch freestyle at the 2012 World Championships

2011/2012 season

In the 2011/12 season, Savchenko and Szolkowy won the Grand Prix final for the third time after 2007/08 and 2010/11 , this time ahead of the Russian couple Tatiana Wolossoshar and Maxim Trankow . After a torn muscle fiber in Savchenko's left thigh on January 19, 2012, the couple were unable to take part in the European Championships in Sheffield at the end of January and defend their title despite having already traveled there . This went to the Russians Wolossoschar / Trankow. At the end of March 2012, however, the German figure skating couple was able to take part in the World Championships in Nice . Already after the short program, in which Savchenko and Szolkowy had successfully shown a triple throwing axel for the first time, they took the lead. They did not give it up after their new kind of freestyle, which was inspired by Pina Bausch's dance theater and despite two major mistakes, and won the world championship title for the fourth time with an extremely narrow margin of 0.11 points over their Russian rivals. In doing so, they set the German title record of Maxi Herber and Ernst Baier , who also won four world championships between 1936 and 1939. In the pair skating history, only Irina Rodnina and Alexander Saizew (six titles) were more often victorious at world championships .

2012/2013 season

The 2012/13 season began with a win at Skate Canada , although Szolkowy started with a flu. However , Savchenko and Szolkowy had to cancel their participation in the Eric Bompard Trophy due to their illness, which had developed into sinusitis, and were therefore unable to qualify for the Grand Prix final .

Savchenko and Szolkowy received criticism early in the season for the selection of their music, the Boléro , which is often used in figure skating, and their overly colorful costumes, which a designer studio in Chemnitz had designed.

Good news at the start of the season, however, was the signing of a three-year contract with the first major sponsor of her career, the investment company ThomasLloyd in Berlin. Szolkowy commented: “Knowing that we can focus on training and competition alone is a good feeling. We don't necessarily have to take care of the finances every month. "

At the European Championships in Zagreb and the World Championships in London , Canada , Savchenko and Szolkowy had to be satisfied with the silver medal behind their competitors Tatjana Wolossoschar and Maxim Trankow . In the process, they also lost their world points records in freestyle and overall performance to the Russians.

2013/2014 season

The Olympic season got off to a promising start for the Chemnitz figure skating couple, with victories in both of their Grand Prix competitions , the Cup of China and the Cup of Russia . They were victories number 13 and 14 in Grand Prix competitions. Savchenko and Szolkowy won the Cup of China for the first time. They completed their gold medal collection at the six Grand Prix competitions, becoming only the second couple in history after Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo . It was also the ninth year in a row that Savchenko and Szolkowy had won at least one Grand Prix. At the Grand Prix final , the Germans were able to defeat their big rivals Tatjana Wolossoschar and Maxim Trankow with a personal best in the freestyle of 227.03 points . It was the fourth victory of her career in the Grand Prix final.

The figure skating couple had to cancel the European championship in Budapest after the short program due to a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract with Aljona Savchenko.

After making mistakes in the freestyle, Savchenko and Szolkowy finished their third Olympic Games in Sochi , just as they did four years earlier, only on bronze. The German couple had to risk everything in this freestyle, because despite a personal best of 79.64 points in the short program against their Russian rivals due to the evaluation of the judges. Tatjana Wolossoschar and Maxim Trankow used their home advantage and won ahead of their Russian compatriots Xenija Stolbowa and Fyodor Klimow, cheered on by the audience . For winning the bronze medal, they were awarded the silver laurel leaf on May 8, 2014 by Federal President Joachim Gauck .

At the last joint competition of their competitive career, the World Championship in Saitama , Japan , Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won the gold medal ahead of the Russian duo Stolbowa / Klimow and the Canadian duo Duhamel / Radford. It was the overall fifth title of the German figure skating couple at world championships. Only Irina Rodnina and Alexander Saizew (6) achieved more titles in history .

Szolkowy had previously announced that he would end his career after the World Cup. He justified this as follows: “My body sends clear signals. With my speed and the jumps, I have a harder time than a few years ago. "

Career as a trainer and functionary

In September 2014, Szolkowy announced that he would be working in the figure skating team around Russian trainer Nina Moser as a junior trainer. He justified this with the fact that he could still be active in top-class sport after his career ended; Talks about his professional future had taken place with the German Ice Skating Union (DEU), but they did not lead to any result. In March 2015, Szolkowy was appointed by the DEU as head of a project to coordinate pair skating at all German training centers.

On September 16, 2015, he was unanimously elected chairman of the Chemnitz Ice Skating Club (CEC). He has since resigned because of his move to the United States in the spring of 2019. He lives with his family in Irvine , California , where he works as a trainer.

family

On August 1, 2014, Szolkowy married Romy Born from Switzerland, with whom he had been together for five years, in Chemnitz. In September 2015, they became parents of a son.

Honors

By 2013, the ice skating couple Aljona Savchenko / Robin Szolkowy had been awarded the Chemmy , the award for the best team of the year in Chemnitz, eight times . He was also honored on May 5, 2014 by being awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf.
