Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot, 2017

Bruno Massot (born January 28, 1989 in Caen ) is a French - German figure skater who starts in pair skating . He and Aljona Savchenko became Olympic champion for Germany at the 2018 Olympic Games and world champion in the same year.

Career

In 2012 Massot became French champion with his then partner Darja Popowa . He started training with Aljona Savchenko in April 2014 and moved to Chemnitz .

On September 28, 2014, Massot sealed his move to the German Ice Skating Union . From the following month he trained with Savchenko in Oberstdorf under Alexander König . It was only released in November 2015 in return for a payment of 30,000 euros to the French Ice Sports Federation .

The first joint competition between Massots and Savchenkos ended with a victory at the Tallinn Trophy on November 19, 2015. In December 2015 they became German champions for the first time . The following year the duo became vice European champions for the first time . Massot and Savchenko also won the silver medal for Germany at the 2017 World Championships and 2017 European Championships .

In November 2017, Massot received German citizenship after passing the language test required for naturalization on the third attempt, and was henceforth entitled to compete in the Olympic Games with his partner . After winning the Grand Prix final in December 2017, Savchenko and Massot went to the 2018 Olympic Games as gold candidates . Above all, Savchenko formulated the goal of winning the Olympic gold medal in advance, also publicly, after she had missed this title in the last two events with her previous partner Robin Szolkowy .

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , the couple initially competed in a team . After Savchenko fell in the triple throw flip, both took third place in the short program, and the team came in seventh in the final score. In the pair run five days later, Savchenko and Massot were initially in fourth place after the short program because of a mistake by Massot. Massot jumped the Salchow only twice instead of three times, which meant a loss of more than four points and a gap of over five points on the leading Chinese Sui Wenjing and Han Cong . The next day, however, Savchenko and Massot shone with a faultless freestyle, which was rated with a new world record number of 159.31 points. After the competition that followed showed weaknesses this time, Savchenko and Massot became Olympic champions with this performance and less than half a point ahead.
