Until 2000, Rex ran with Katharina Rybkowski ( Düsseldorfer EG). The couple trained with Monika Scheibe in Chemnitz, but could not qualify for the European and World Championships. An interlude with Stefanie Weiss followed, but Rico Rex did not even start with her at German championships. The couple had to give up at the 2001 open French championships. In 2001 Rex ran with the Czech Radka Zlatohlavková. At the German Championships in 2002, however, the couple had to give up. As a result, the couple separated again.

Since spring 2002 Rico Rex ran together with the former German individual runner Eva-Maria Fitze . Her trainer in Chemnitz was Ingo Steuer until December 2005 , after which Monika Scheibe took over the care of the couple. Rex and his partner Eva-Maria Fitze ended his career as a figure skater after completing the pair skating competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and taking 15th place. From then on he worked as a project manager at a Dresden marketing agency.

In 2006 Rex took part as a trainer with Collien Ulmen-Fernandes on the RTL show Dancing on Ice , but dropped out in the second episode. Rico Rex was a sports soldier in the Bundeswehr in the sports promotion group in Frankenberg during his competitive sports time . His rank was sergeant major .

Rico Rex is currently working as a freelance trainer in Berlin.
