Ernst Baier (born September 27, 1905 in Zittau ; † July 8, 2001 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German figure skater who started in single and pair skating .

Career

In pairs skating with Maxi Herber Baier was designed by 1935 bis 1939 five consecutive European champion from 1936 bis 1939 four times world champion and 1936 Olympic champion in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

Ernst Baier and Maxi Herber have revolutionized pair skating. They were the first to show parallel jumps. The couple also appeared in Leni Riefenstahl's official Olympic film . Ernst Baier had designed the freestyle and found a composer who accompanied it musically in order to create a unity between running and music.

Ernst Baier, who started for the Berliner SC, was also successful in the individual run and was runner-up in Europe three times ( 1931 , 1932 , 1933 ), twice as runner-up world champion ( 1933 , 1934 ) and won silver medals at the Olympic Games 1936 behind Karl Schäfer .

Baier is - alongside the British Madge Syers , who succeeded in doing this in 1908 - one of only two people and the only man who was able to win two medals in figure skating at the same Olympic Games, both in individual skating and in pair skating.

At the same time as his sports career, Baier finished his architecture studies.

After their amateur career, Baier and Herber married in 1940 and had two sons and a daughter. The marriage ended in divorce in 1964. A few years later, Ernst Baier remarried - a Swedish figure skater - had a daughter and was divorced again. He later married a third time.

After the Second World War , the Baier couple founded the Eisrevue Eisballett Maxi and Ernst Baier in 1951 . It later sold the business to Holiday On Ice.

Baier's grave is in the Partenkirchen cemetery .
