The now married French Andrée Brunet and Pierre Brunet defended their Olympic title from 1928 . It was the first Olympic title defense in pair skating. The French win the title was less clear than expected. The Americans Beatrix Loughran and Sherwin Badger showed the idea of their life and won the silver medal. Two judges, one of whom was Walter Jakobsson , placed her first. Loughran had already won two medals in the Olympic Games in 1924 and 1928 . By winning her third medal, she is still the only American figure skater who managed to win three Olympic medals. The Hungarians Emília Rotter and László Szollás , who were placed first by a judge, won the first medal for their country at the Winter Olympics with bronze.
