Hayes Alan Jenkins succeeded his successful compatriot Richard Button after the Olympic Games in 1952 and has remained undefeated since then. So he went to Cortina as the undisputed favorite and won the gold medal. However, the decision was tighter than expected. Jenkins' compatriot Ronald Robertson , known for his strengths in jumps and pirouettes, won the freestyle. In the end, Robertson was less than a point and three places behind Jenkins. The bronze medal went to Jenkins' brother David Jenkins , who in turn succeeded his brother after the Olympic Games and became Olympic champion four years later. The USA thus occupied the entire podium in the men's competition. This was the second time in the Olympic history of figure skating after 1908 , when Sweden won all medals in the men's competition. For the first time in the Olympic history of figure skating, a podium remained without European participation. The best European was the French Alain Giletti in fourth.
