Katarina Witt becomes Olympic champion for the GDR with Carmen

Compulsory: February 24, 8:00 a.m.
Short program: February 25, 6:30 p.m.
Freestyle: February 27, 5:30 p.m.

31 figure skaters from 23 countries took part in this competition.

In duty, Debi Thomas failed on the first figure and was only fourth, but she ran the last two figures the cleanest. The entire program lasted more than nine hours.

Katharina Witt ran the freestyle to the same music as her competitor Debi Thomas : “ Carmen ” by Georges Bizet . Elizabeth Manley inflicted the first loss in the freestyle since 1983 on Witt. It stood four different triples: Toeloop , Salchow , Rittberger and Lutz . The grade was 5.7 to 5.9. Midori Itō showed seven flawless triples (Lutz, Rittberger, Salchow, Toeloop, Flip ), received seven times 5.9 for the technical value. But Thomas couldn't use her chance, because after 30 seconds she messed up the combination with two triple toe loops, because after the second jump she landed on both feet. She made two more crucial mistakes with the triple Rittberger and the second triple Salchow (hand on the ice). So she only got 5.5 to 5.7. Witt was the first to defend his title since Sonja Henie (from 1928 to 1936).

20 couples from 14 countries took part. There were no post-duty changes among the top ten. The winners Bestemjanowa and Bukin received three times the grade 6.0 for the artistic impression. The French bronze medal winners of the European Championships in Prague, Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay, caused some confusion, but they were less lucky with their unconventional presentation with the judges than four years earlier Jayne Torvill / Christopher Dean . The Austrian couple Beck achieved the goal of their wishes and were able to make the European Championship disappointment (5th place) forget.
