71 participants from 21 countries, 68 of them in the rating. Disqualified: Andreas Zingerle (ITA).

Despite the three missed shots, Roetsch was in a class of its own because many others had even more problems shooting. Austria's Eder went well, but six misses were too many. Defending champion Angerer only came in 10th. The Passler from Antholz confirmed his good World Cup results. His team-mate Gottlieb Taschler finished eleventh, 2: 20.3 minutes behind. Double world champion and Olympic champion Kvalfoss missed his chances for a medal in shooting, because in running he was as fast as silver winner Medvedzew.

16 relays at the start, all at the finish.

The goal of the Austrians was modest because of the poor shooting performance, but 6th place seemed possible. Unexpectedly, starting runner Lengauer was even in the lead, and final runner Eder managed to intercept the GDR rival Sehmisch. With a better shot performance, bronze would have been possible. The victory of the Soviet Union was safe, the FRG defeated Italy in the battle for silver.
