At the XI. The 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo hosted two biathlon competitions. The venue was the Makomanai biathlon area in what is now the Minami-ku district . The sport still struggled with its low popularity. In the Bertelsmann edition of the work on the 1972 Olympic Games it reads like this: "It has remained one of the most unpopular competitions to this day."

The 20-kilometer run started as planned on February 8, 1972 at 9:00 a.m., but had to be stopped after a quarter of an hour because visibility was no more than 50 meters due to heavy snowfall. It then had to be postponed by 24 hours, so that the competition started again on February 9, 1972 at 9:01 a.m. 54 athletes from 14 countries took part, 53 of whom reached the finish line.

A total of four shooting tests had to be completed, two standing and two lying down. At each stand, five shots had to be fired at the targets 150 meters away with a biathlon rifle. Every outside hit was punished with a one-minute serve, every hit outside the evaluation circle with two minutes.

The 4 × 7.5 km relay race began on February 11, 1972 at 9:00 a.m. 13 teams with 52 athletes took part in this competition. Each athlete had to complete two shooting tests, lying after 2.5 km and standing after 5 km. The fragile discs had a diameter of 15 cm when shooting prone and 35 cm when shooting standing. Eight shots had to be fired at the targets 150 meters away per stand. A 150 meter penalty loop had to be run for each target not hit.
