The Federal Republic of Germany took part in the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan with a delegation of 79 athletes, 63 men and 16 women.

Since 1968 it was the second participation of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Olympic Winter Games .

Flag bearer

Cross-country skier Walter Demel carried the flag of the Federal Republic of Germany during the opening ceremony in the Makomanai Stadium .

With three won gold, a silver and a bronze medal, the West German team finished 6th in the medal count .
