The German team at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi

Germany took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi with 153 athletes, including 77 women and 76 men, in all 15 sports. Chef de Mission was Michael Vesper .

In a first nomination phase on December 18, 2013, 26 German athletes (9 women and 17 men) in four sports were named. The second and final round of nominations took place on January 23, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main. All supervisors were called on that day.

Success Bonuses

For particularly successful athletes, the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation awarded prizes - as it did for games before -: 20,000 euros for winning a gold medal, 15,000 for silver and 10,000 for bronze. Non-medal ranks were also rewarded with a success payment, graduated up to 8th place (1,500 euros). The greatest success of a participant was honored. A total of 548,500 euros in bonuses were distributed during the winter games.

(1) Vanessa Hinz was officially nominated by the DOSB, but did not accompany the German team to Russia because, like other runners, she could not qualify for the team's sixth place in the World Cup. She stayed in Germany and was intended to replace several German runners who failed.
