Gianina Ernst (born December 31, 1998 in Samedan , Graubünden , Switzerland ) is a German - Swiss ski jumper (dual citizenship) who has competed for Germany since 2013. She is the daughter of the German ski jumper Joachim Ernst and the Swiss cross-country skier Cornelia Thomas .

Career

On March 2nd, 2013 Gianina Ernst started in the Continental Cup for the first time and reached 15th place on the Fichtelbergschanze in Oberwiesenthal . In the overall ranking she finished 24th. She started for the Swiss Ski Association until June 2013, but then decided to change countries in order to have a team of other athletes around. Since then she has attended the sports boarding school in Oberstdorf while the family lives in Winterthur .

At the start of the 2013/14 Alpine Cup season, Ernst won both competitions in Pöhla and second place in the fourth competition on the Ochsenkopfschanze in Bischofsgrün . In the summer season of the Continental Cup , she completed both competitions in Lillehammer and reached ninth and sixth place, which she finished seventh in the final ranking. At the German Championships 2013 in Oberstdorf , she won silver in the junior category and bronze in the women's class.

During her first appearance in the Ski Jumping World Cup on December 7, 2013 in Lillehammer , Ernst and Daniela Iraschko-Stolz achieved second place and thus also their first World Cup podium. With this placement, she qualified for participation in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and, at the age of 15, was the youngest participant in the Olympic Games in Russia. If she had been born just four hours later, she would not have been allowed to start. In Sochi, she jumped to 28th place.

At the Junior World Championship in Almaty , Gianina Ernst and her teammates Henriette Kraus , Anna Rupprecht and Pauline Heßler won gold in the team competition. In the individual competition, she finished tenth.

At the 2017 Junior World Championships in Park City , Utah , Ernst won the gold medal in the team competition together with Agnes Reisch , Luisa Görlich and Pauline Heßler . In the individual competition she took fourth place. A jar later, she won the silver medal with the mixed team in the 2018 championships in Kandersteg, Switzerland .

On December 14, 2018, Ernst fell on landing at the Continental Cup competition in Notodden and tore his cruciate ligament and the outer meniscus, which means that she is out of action for the entire 2018/19 season.
