economy
Sawmills and wood processing factories were established on the Tinnelva River in the first third of the 19th century. In 1905 the Norsk Hydro group, founded by Sam Eyde and Kristian Birkeland , started producing artificial saltpeter and fertilizer salt . For a few years the tranquil place turned into a kind of Norwegian Klondike . The prerequisite for this hectic industrial boom was the intensive use of hydropower in Telemark, both for the chemical industry, as in the case of Norsk Hydro, and for wood and iron processing at Tinfos .
Fertilizer production in Notodden was scaled back in the course of the 20th century and later stopped completely. In the chemical industry, Notodden is still a production site for plastics and foils. There are also suppliers for the armaments industry in Kongsberg and for unmanned submarines for use, for example, on oil drilling platforms.
The 2018 resulting from the College Southeast Norway University Southeast Norway has a campus in Notodden, are formed on the teacher since 1895 and has been teaching since 1938 art and design. A special feature is the offer of online courses for students from all over Norway. With five other departments, the university offers a total of more than 18,000 students training places, making it the fourth largest university in Norway.
