Nissedal is an independent municipality in the Telemark region in the west of the province ( Fylke ) Vestfold og Telemark ( Norway ) with 1448 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The administrative center Treungen, with approx. 700 inhabitants, is located 240 km southwest of Oslo on the southern tip of the narrow, elongated Lake Nisser . The highest point in the municipality are the peaks of Førheinutane (1049 m). The name Nisser , from which the municipality derives its name, goes back to the Old Norse word Niðrsær , which means something like "the lower lake".

The main economic sectors of the municipality include agriculture , timber trade , fur farming , fishing , the energy industry and, above all, tourism . The unemployment rate in the agriculturally structured area was 1.9 percent in December 2016 and thus below the national average.

Attractions

  • Nisser - 35 km long and up to 234 meters deep, it is the largest lake in Telemark and the tenth largest lake in Norway; it extends over an area of ​​76 km² and has the best drinking water quality . The sandy beaches, u. a. near Fjone on the west coast, attracts thousands of bathers every year.
  • Rock carvings - In the immediate vicinity of the Nisser, especially on the west coast, rock carvings up to 5000 years old and burial mounds from the Viking Age can be viewed.
  • Cable ferry - Norway's last cable ferry has been operating at the narrowest point of the Nisser between Fjone and Sundsodden since 1947; it transports around 6,000 vehicles annually.
