Drangedal (from Old Norse drangr , "pointed peak") is a sparsely populated municipality in the southwest of the Norwegian province of Vestfold og Telemark . The wooded area with a large number of game is historically divided into the north-western Tørdal, which belongs to medieval Telemark, and the Drangedal, which belongs to Grenland . Other scattered settlements in the municipality are Henseid, Kjosen and Kroken. Neighboring municipalities are, clockwise from north to west, Kviteseid , Nome , Skien , Bamble , Kragerø , Gjerstad and Nissedal .
The center of Drangedal on the north-west bank of the upper Tokke is officially called “ Prestestranda ” (roughly “beach of the parish”), but is usually called “Stranna” by the population. The local government, church, elementary school (elementary and middle school) and health center are located here. The wooden church and the spacious cemetery with huge individual trees are in an impressive location on the slope edge above the Tokke, which forms a lake here. A bathing beach was set up on the bank. Secondary schools are in Bø , Skien, Porsgrunn and Kragerø . The central hospital in Skien, STHF Telemark, is just under an hour's drive away.
In 1927 the “ Sørlandsbane ” , which is still single-tracked, reached Drangedal. The Torp airport is 90 minutes away by car. There are ferry connections to Denmark from Langesund (45 minutes by car) and Larvik (75 minutes by car).
Numerous small forest operations , often part-time, are economically important . The municipality itself is the largest employer. Another major employer for a long time was the plastics factory Norsk Wavin A / S - Drangedal in Prestestranda, which has been withdrawing from the region since 2002 and cutting its jobs there. A transport company is currently the largest private operation. Most of the other workers commute to the surrounding cities or the state capital.
The “Gautefall” ski area in the western part of the municipality is mainly used by the local population. Foreign winter sports tourists come primarily from Denmark and Northern Germany. In summer there is the possibility of biathlon on four kilometers of paved summer ski trails, one of the most modern facilities of its kind in Scandinavia. Internationally sporty Drangedaler can be found in the areas of cross-country skiing , biathlon and shooting sports . Four active clubs each maintain their own trails . Other recreational activities include football, hiking, cycling, fishing and hunting. The main hunted is elk (over 700 annual killings in 2001 and 2002, tendency sharply decreasing), deer and other red deer including game birds ( pheasant , ptarmigan , capercaillie ). Predator hunts include lynx , wolf, and bear , with only lynx native to the region. Wolf and bear are grazing animals.
