Vinje is a municipality in the Telemark region in the Fylke Vestfold og Telemark in Norway . In the north it borders on Nore og Uvdal , in the east on Tinn and Seljord , in the south on Tokke and Bykle and in the west on Suldal and Ullensvang . Vinje is the only municipality in Norway that borders on four different forks. The highest elevation is moh at 1674 . the Nupsegga . In terms of area, Vinje (after Rendalen ) is the second largest municipality in southern Norway and is larger than the entire former Fylke Vestfold . With 1.18 inhabitants / km² the municipality is very sparsely populated (national average: 13.9 U / km²). Only 15% of the population live in closed settlement areas. The municipality is the highest in Telemark and stretches along the Hardangervidda National Park . It has a 90 km² area in the national park, Berunuten Vest , with six huts for free use.
The economy flourished for many years. In 2002 the average income per inhabitant was 33,478 crowns (national average 24,771 crowns). The community owes this in large part to the income from the expansion of the Tokke River in the 1960s and 1970s. The residents also benefit from the low electricity prices. On the other hand, large mountain regions on the edge of the Hardangervidda were irretrievably destroyed by reservoir projects such as the Songadamm and Møsvatn .
The largest employer in Vinje is the municipality. The rehabilitation center in Rauland is the largest private employer. 39.4% of employees work in public administration. In terms of other important employers, the engineering company Nemek should be mentioned.
The well-known winter sports resort Rauland is located in Vinje and attracts many tourists every year.
