life and work

Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, the son of a poor but gifted housekeeper, was a shepherd boy and laboriously worked his way up to a school teacher and copyist in the Department of Justice, also studied law, but lost his various jobs because of his opposition and his attacks on the respective superiors. Its main importance lies in its public education journalism. In the weekly Andhrimner published by him with Henrik Ibsen and Paul Botten-Hansen in 1851 , in his own magazine Dølen (1858-70), in Drammen Tidende, among others, he pursued the sleepy religious and civic narrow-mindedness with irony, humor and all didactic means to awaken knowledgeable energy and to bring to his country the benefits of the great European movements. From this point of view, the nature of his works that sharply criticizing travel impressions is A Norseman's views of Britain and the British (Edinburgh 1862), which at Heinrich Heine Harzreise reminiscent Ferdaminni fraa Sumaren 1860 (2 vols., 1861), the Versdichtung Storegut ( 1866; 6th edition 1898) and to judge some of his poetry.

Vinje, who wrote in Landsmål from 1858, was also a lyric poet with somewhat melancholy features and longing childhood memories; especially his natural poetry is excellent. He wrote a cycle of poems that Edvard Grieg set to music. This song cycle, Op. 33, contains 12 chants that are often found in the programs of song recitals. Especially in 2007 - the 100th year of Grieg's death - Vinje's poetry received a lot of attention and distribution.

Olav Midttun got an edition of Vinje's writings ( Skrifter i samling , 5 vols., 1916-21; 2nd edition Oslo 1942-48).
