nature
The surrounding rock consists largely of quartzite . The main valleys Flatdal with Åmotsdal and the narrow Kivledal with Sundsbarmvatn both flow at the western end of Seljordsvatn. Between these valleys lies the mountain Skorve ( 1370 moh. ), But the highest mountain in the municipality is the Brattefjell ( 1540 moh. ) In the north.
history
A Troy castle is painted on the western facade of the church from the 10th century near the entrance . In front of the church there is a sculpture of Anne Grimsdalen depicting the priest Magnus Brostrup Landstad , who was a priest in Seljord from 1840 to 1848. There is also a stone with a weight of 570 kg, which the "Sterke-Nils" (Nils Olsson Langedal, 1772–1800) is said to have lifted according to legend.
The Flatdal church from 1654, as well as the Nutheim inn and a painting school are located in Flatdal.
In 1944, a Junkers collided with a mountain on Deutsche Lufthansa Flight 7 nearby , killing all 15 occupants.
In the center of Seljord there are many sculptures and a memorial to American soldiers who fell on the Skorve in 1944. The municipality was named Nynorskommune of the year in 2010 because, among other things, it offers good language development for children. In Seljordsvatn , a lake that is partly in the municipality's area, there is said to be a sea monster named Selma . Selma is said to have been sighted for the first time in the summer of 1750.
colonization
The population of Seljord had its maximum already in the middle of the 17th century with almost 4000 inhabitants. After that, the number fell to just 2900 inhabitants by around 1910. Since then the population has been around 3,000. In the years 1996–2006 it fell by 6.6% (to 2,912 inh.). Most of the residents have the administrative center of Seljord on the northwest side of Seljordsvatn, Flatdal and the mountainous area of Åmotsdal.
