Kragerø is a municipality in the south of Norway in the province of Vestfold og Telemark . The administrative center of the municipality is located in the town of the same name, Kragerø . In summer Kragerø is a popular destination for tourists.

The name Kragerø is derived either in the Old Norse form "Krákarøy" from crows or ravens on the islands (øy means island) or from the Old Norse term "Krag" for cliffs and rocks.

Tusenårsted the municipality is the seafront along the Blindtarmen. The harbor bay is located in the center of the coastal town of Kragerø.

Kragerø borders the municipality of Bamble in the north-east and the municipality of Drangedal in the northwest . In the west, the province of Agder joins with the municipalities of Gjerstad in the west and Risør in the southwest.

history

Lumbering has been in operation in Kragerø since the 13th century. At first, split wood was traded, later this was also worked with axes. With the advent of the sawmills in the 15th century, a variety of wooden products were produced. These included rafters, boards, oars, wooden barrels and much more, so that by the middle of the 16th century a complete timber industry had developed.

Kragerø has also been an important transshipment port for timber exports since the 17th century at the latest . Since the first half of the 19th century, the production of natural ice and its export - especially to England - developed into an important industry.
