Vestfold og Telemark (German Vestfold and Telemark ) is a Norwegian province ( Fylke ), which was created on January 1, 2020 from the merger of the provinces Telemark and Vestfold without the municipality of Svelvik . Vestfold og Telemark borders Viken to the north, Vestland to the northwest and Rogaland and Agder to the west . In the southeast lies the coast to the Skagerrak . The province comprises the southern part of the Østlandet region .
The Lågen , one of Norway's longest rivers, flows into the North Sea ( Skagerrak ) in Vestfold og Telemark . Large parts of Telemark are in the catchment area of the Skiensvassdraget river system . The highest mountain in the province is the 1883 moh. high Gaustatoppen .

Merger of the provinces
The merger of the provinces was controversial on both sides. In April 2017 the Parliament of Telemark voted against a merger, while Vestfold envisaged a merger of Telemark and Buskerud , which Buskerud rejected.
There were also long discussions about the name. At the beginning of the merger negotiations, the name "Skagerrak" was used, but did not prevail because it was felt to be inappropriate. Vestfold later proposed the name "Vest- Viken ", which was immediately rejected by Telemark, as the name had been used in 1942 by the Nasjonal Samling , Norway's only authorized and fascist party from 1940 to 1945, for the merger of Vestfold and Buskerud. Ultimately, the Council's proposal for the Norwegian Language , the double name, was adopted.
Administrative division
Vestfold og Telemark is divided into 23 municipalities. Three municipalities were created at the same time as the province by amalgamating old municipalities: Holmestrand (from Holmestrand and Sande ), Midt-Telemark (from Bø and Sauherad ) and Tønsberg (from Re and Tønsberg).

coat of arms
Blazon : "On Red two gold acanthus traversing equipment over a golden bow of a Knarr boots ."
The boat in the center of the coat of arms stands for the Klåstad ship, a merchant ship from the Viking Age discovered in 1893, which is on display in Slottsfjellsmuseet in Tønsberg. It symbolizes the waterways and the coast of the province and trade with Europe. The acanthus ornament refers to medieval art in Vestfold's churches and stands for unity, creativity, health and eternal life as well as the influence of European culture. The colors red and gold are said to mean authority and wisdom.
