The Slottsfjellsmuseet ( Castle Hill Museum ) is a historical museum with an open-air section in Tønsberg ( Fylke Vestfold og Telemark ) on the west bank of the Oslofjord . The museum of the museum association Vestfold Museene is located at the foot of Tønsberg Castle Hill with the ruins of the medieval Tunsberghus Castle . Tønsberg is considered to be the oldest Norwegian city.
history
The forerunner of today's museum was the Tønsberg Museum , the oldest local museum in the region. Like the Tønsberg Sea Museum, this was integrated into the Vestfold Fylkesmuseum , founded in 1939 . This in turn was integrated into the umbrella institution Vestfold Museene in 2008 .
Exhibitions
The exhibits in the exhibition building illustrate the nature and history of Vestfold. The focus is on the history of the city and the surrounding area, shipping and whaling , the Middle Ages, agriculture, folk art and the history of Vestfold during World War II .
Directly behind the exhibition building is the open-air section with relocated houses grouped around a courtyard. Among them is a medieval hay barn .
