history

Haukelivegen near Haukeliseter

The connection from east to west Norway is likely to have led over the Haukelifjell as early as the Viking Age . Many pilgrims who visited Røldal stave church had to use this connection.

In 1704 a plan was submitted for the first time that provided for the construction of a path that could be used for horse-drawn carriages. However, the construction work for implementation did not begin until 150 years later. In 1889 the route could then be used continuously. The highest point on the route near Dyrskar is 1148 m above sea level . This is where Norway's first road tunnel was built in 1886.

Because of the bad weather conditions, the road had to be closed in winter. In some years the road was closed for up to 8 months due to the enormous amounts of snow and heavy snowdrifts.

Simultaneously with the completion of the path, the need to build a year-round connection across the Haukelifjell was recognized. It was originally discussed to secure the connection by building a railway line. However, these plans were not implemented. In 1946 there was another initiative to build a railway line. However, these plans were finally dropped in 1953.

In autumn 1968, after a construction period of 10 years, the revised road was opened to traffic. It could now be used for the first time as a year-round connection. To this was u. a. the construction of a number of tunnels is necessary. The construction of the road was also accelerated by the expansion of hydropower in the area at Haukelifjell . It is financed by collecting tolls . After the end of the financing period, tolling was discontinued on December 31, 1990.
