Map with all coordinates: The Ennstal Straße B 320 (formerly B 146 and B308 Ennstal replacement road ) is a state road B in Salzburg and Styria , a former federal road . It runs over a length of 78 km through the upper Ennstal from Altenmarkt im Pongau to Liezen and connects the Tauern Autobahn A 10 with the Pyhrn Autobahn A 9. The Ennstal Straße always leads along the Enns, first through the Mandling Pass to Schladming and from there further downstream to Liezen. The entire route also bears the designation Europastraße 651 and is thus part of the European road network . Since 20 August 1999, the street is called B 320 called
history
Monarchy and early 20th century
The road through the upper Ennstal was already known as Ennsthaler Straße in the 19th century . In 1847 there were two toll stations in Mandling (state border) and Gröbming , which brought in around 1,000 guilders for the state treasury.
The Salzburger Strasse (in Styria) or Steierer Strasse (in Salzburg) between Bischofshofen and Liezen is one of the former imperial roads that were taken over as federal roads in 1921. Until 1938 this federal road was designated as the B 61, after the connection of Austria it was run as part of the Reichsstraße 318 until 1945 . Since 1948 this federal road has been continuously referred to as Ennstal Straße . On January 1, 1949, Ennstal Strasse was extended to Hieflau.
The guest worker route
According to the Federal Roads Act of 1971, Ennstal Schnellstraße S 8 was supposed to replace Ennstal Straße between Altenmarkt and Liezen, while the remaining section between Liezen and Hieflau was renamed Gesäuse Straße B 112. However, this expressway was not built, so on April 1, 1983 a new federal highway B 146 was set up between Altenmarkt and Trautenfels, where the shortened Ennstal expressway was supposed to end.
Since April 1, 1986 (also the abolition of the shortened expressway), the entire route between Altenmarkt and Hieflau has again been designated as Ennstal Straße B 146.
Since the 1930s the road has been part of European Route 5 from London to Istanbul . In the 1970s and 1980s, up to the Balkan War of 1991, Ennstal Strasse was one of the most critical sections of the guest worker route with major traffic obstructions during vacation times and high accident rates. The new system was introduced around 1985 and the route is no longer the main route today: the long-distance route leads over the Pyhrn Autobahn A 9, the road carries the three-digit, lower-ranking number E 651.
Controversy over the expansion
The necessity and sensibility of expanding the road connection through the Ennstal has been hotly debated for decades. After the acute situation of Alpine transit had ceased to exist in the 1990s and the road is primarily used for local traffic today, citizens' initiatives such as Zukunft Ennstal - ARGE Intermodale Verkehrsplanung vehemently oppose the expansion of the expressway . In the Styrian state parliament, the Greens and the KPÖ are against road construction, the SPÖ does not take a clear position, while the ÖVP is expressly in favor of building the expressway. At the end of November 2018, the Regional Transport Authority presented 14 expansion measures, 7 of which are to be completed by the end of 2023. There are new accompanying paths for residents and third lanes on Ennstalstraße.
The route directly along the Enns is problematic, the valley floor is an alluvial forest area . The corncrake , a rare bird that breeds in the Ennstal , became famous during the discussion about the construction of the expressway . Since environmental protection directives require the protection of the bird, its appearance in the Ennstal contributes to the delay in road construction. The corn crake became a kind of "heraldic animal" of the opponents of road construction.
