The Loferer road ( B 178 ) is a country road in Austria . with a length of 65.1 km.

course

The Loferer Straße begins at the Wörgl -Ost motorway feeder in the municipality of Kirchbichl in the Inntal valley and leads past the Wilder Kaiser through the Sölllandl to St. Johann in Tirol . From there it follows the Großache  through the Leukental to Erpfendorf  and then runs past Waidring , over the Strub and Lofer passes into the Saalach valley . It follows this to the state border with Germany at the Steinpass .

history

The Salzburger Straße from Innsbruck via Lofer to Salzburg is one of the federal highways established by the federal law of July 8, 1921. Until 1938 the road between Bregenz and Vienna was designated as B 1, after the connection of Austria this road was led as part of Reichsstraße  31 until 1945 .

From April 1, 1948 to December 31, 1972, this street was continuously referred to as Wiener Straße . According to the Federal Roads Act of 1971, Wiener Strasse was to be replaced by the Loferer Schnellstrasse (S 12). However, this expressway was not built, which is why Loferer Straße has been known as the B 178 since 1999.

District boundary

expansion

Since the B 178 Loferer Straße is a busy connecting road between Wörgl and St. Johann (and further over the Kleine German Eck to Salzburg) and the volume of traffic has risen sharply in recent years, several large construction lots are being planned, under construction or already Completed:
The Lofer and Unken bypasses (with tunnel), the Bruckhäusl bypass (underground route) on the Wörgl municipal area including a direct connection to the Inntal motorway, since 2009 the expansion without intersections in Going and since mid-2012 the expansion without intersections in Söll with an underground route.

In the summer of 2010, construction began on the Söll construction lot from the Wald district at km 9.170 to Hauning at km 11.285. Among other things, the existing intersection in Söll with accesses to the ski area and Söll center was completely replaced by a new underground route with an attached roundabout.

The environmentally friendly redesign of the B 178 in Söll helps improve traffic safety. Nevertheless, the new route in Söll is heavily criticized by the population, as the traffic noise has increased significantly in some districts around the center since the reopening in 2012. The only one-sided 3.10 meter high and around 400 meter long noise protection wall in the Wald district, which echoes the noise in the direction of the town center, and the increase in speed from 60 to 80 km / h including the widening of the lanes are particularly criticized.

The municipality and the state of Tyrol have announced measures to improve the situation in Söll. Nevertheless, the Tyrolean state parliament is now dealing with the noise problem with an urgent motion. The citizens are demanding an independent review of whether and how the currently planned noise protection measures can fully restore the quality of life in Söll: the currently planned improvement work should reduce the noise level by only 3 decibels, although the traffic noise from the new route by up to has increased to 15 decibels. In December 2013, the black-green government coalition did not give the application any urgency. The state parliament committee is currently dealing with the noise problem in Söll. However, the Transport Committee suspended the application without a time limit. The noise problem in Söll is still considerable. The total costs for the environmentally friendly redesign of the B 178 in Söll now amount to 22 million euros.

In the meantime, the Ellmau through-road (construction started in 2013) from km 18.40 to km 19.90 and in the coming years the Scheffau intersection will be expanded to be free of intersections.

According to estimates, the volume of traffic on the B 178 in Sölllandl should double by 2017. The B 178 is one of the busiest roads in Austria and connects Tyrol with Salzburg. There is a lot of transit traffic on the road.

Kilometrage

New / old mileage

With the construction of the Bruckhäusl bypass and the new beginning of the B 178 directly as an extension of the motorway feeder, the road was longer and new kilometers from km 0.0 . At the end of the construction phase there is the transition to the old kilometrage - see photo. The order of the kilometer tables in this section is now: ... - 4.6 - 4.8 - 5.0 - 5.2 - 5.326 / D 4.6 - D 4.8 - D 5.0 - D 5.2 - 5.4 - ...

B178  Like the other former federal highways, Loferer Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
